Vert top and rear defroster

Ok, I noticed that even when the top is down you can turn on the rear defroster. I’d think that if you left it on for a bit, it would damage the material. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I’m surprised that the defroster can be turned on with the top down

The rear defroster automatically turns itself off after ten minutes, so it probably wouldn't cause any problems if you accidently turned it on with the top down.
