What gears?

I bought my 96 gt used last August and my question is, How can I tell what kind of gears are in my car? I don't know if my rear end is stock or aftermarket, it seems like when I make fast turns my rear end comes around, which is what everybody says is a symptom of having a higher gear ratio. Is there a way to tell?

Can't remember exactly, but has to do with jacking the rear end, turning the wheel and seeing how many revolutions the axle makes

Yes, we kind of already described that. But what about the revolutions? How do you calculate the gear from doing that?

That will not work because the spider packet will mess it up. You're better off doing what forpit2000gt said.

Have you ever wonderd why when you jack your car up and spin one of the wheels, the other spins in the oppisite direction? That is because of the spider packet (what I was tough to call it at least) which is made up of two pinion gears and two side gears. Sorry, I've never wondered that. Probably because both of my Mustangs have had a Track Lok limited slip. Limited slip cars won't do that, unless the clutches are completely shot.

Not true. A limited slip axle (which I believe all GT's come with standard) uses clutches to tie the axles together and make them turn the same speed, thus also preventing them from turning the opposite way like an open diff would.

Your car most likely has one of three different ratios, assuming that the rear end is stock.
