Your Opinion on Vinyl Dye for Top Boot?

I bought a brand new top boot on EBay for a good price but it is dark blue and I plan to dye it black. I will have to install the snaps to match the ones on the car.

Given that the boot is flexible, do you think I should:

1) Install the snaps, put it on the car, and dye it in place (stretched) or

2) Dye it, then install the snaps, then just put it on the car.

I can't decide whether the dye will bunch up in #1 or crack when stretched in #2.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I painted some flexible parts, like the sun visors, with a vinyl paint about 12 years ago and it still is holding up just fine. But visors don't get too much twist and stretch action..

I used a product called Vinyl Prep, if I recall the name.. to soften up the plastic and prepare it for paint. It was a blue liquid.
