My friend wants to make his Ranger a littl faster...

He has a '99 Ranger Sport Stepside with the 3.0L V6

What could he do, short of forced induction, that would give him some more power?
He alreadyhas twin flowmasters.

I'm pretty sure the ranger has the 8.8, so you could get some gears. Get a chip, and if its an auto, it'll firm up the shifts. Other than that, I don't know what kind of aftermarket there is for rangers.

Then there's always the option to drop a 302 in there.

3.0 Rangers are horribly underpowered. I don't think there's really anything he can do to pick up more than 5 or 10hp without N2O or a blower. I say go with either a blower, drop in a 5.0, or trade it for a 4.0 Ranger or something faster.

+1... he needs a mustang to mod not a ranger... im not gonna try and mod a festiva. nitrous is he best best kits are cheap if he dont wanna spend at least that much he must not wanna go that fast then.. do a k&n air filter and find out the rear end try gears i guess.?

I just found my receipt for my GT40P engine; $350. It came with the Exploder manifolds and oiling system; everything except ecu. Just tell him to do that.

+2 Save the money. dump the ranger mod idea. The 3.0 was the worst engine in those trucks. I had a 2.3L 4 banger for a while and it was okay for reliable and gas, but sucked for power. I also had a friend with the 4.0, it was better, but it's still a truck. Don't throw good money after bad. I know you guys are saying et another car, but thats what hes stuck with as of now so he just wants to make it a little quicker w/o spending alot of money. Im thinking maybe port the heads and gears.

Get on some Ranger forums and see if you can find anything useful there. I'm sure ported heads, ported intake, and cams(if anybody makes them) will add some hp, but I have no idea how much. I'd be surprised if he makes it over 200hp n/a.

Im thinking most Rangers came with 3.73 gears. Some 4.10's might help, and a locker will definitely help if it doesn't already have one.

I just don't get why your buddy would dump $$ into an engine that isn't really meant for performance. I really think that is a waste of $$. To each their own though, it just seems futile to go through all the work to port, polish or otherwise look for horsies in a Ranger. But again, to each their own.

I really do highly recommend www.fordranger.com if it's still around, those guys (and gals, I guess) helped out with a load of things and they could steer your friend in the right direction.
