Guys i am getting ready to buy a set of jba shortie headers. Have to stay legal . I am ready to buy but just want to make sure they are as good a quality as i think they are. I know they had some issues a while ago with cracking , does anybody know if they got that squared away?

i have em, and I love them. Definitly could feel the difference, especially with a full exhaust. the 5.0 ones cracked for a while, but they come with lifetime warrenty and will always send u new ones if u have problems.

My JBA headers cracked at the flange, and JBA wouldn't stand behind them. Besides, the stock log manifolds are almost as good. And for $460+, that is just not acceptable. If you are going to spend that kind of money, you really should buy some long tubes or the Bassani Mid-length headers. I know that having to drop the coin for a mid pipe at the same time may keep you from doing it right now. But you are MUCH better off waiting, and doing it right, than to buy/install JBA shorty headers. Go get yourself the BBK long tubes, or the Bassani Mid lengths and save yourself a lot of trouble!

i've had my JBA's for over a year and a half and have not had a problem with them. droptop2001gt is the first person that i've heard of that didn't get replacements from the factory.

droptop2001gt, who tuned your car? you should be making alot more than 397rwhp with your setup.

The car was tuned by The Turbo People of NY, (Chase and Job Spetters, Jr - to be more precise). But, in all fairness, the car was tuned with an Air/fuel of 11.0:1 with the car's safety/longevity in mind. The car is quite capable of more power, and faster times, but I needed to break in the engine, turbo, and everything else first. Almost every single part was brand new, and needed the break-in time. I didn't want to take any chances, especially since the first real test was the drive home from NY to NC. Eventually the car will get an Accufab upper plenum and 75mm TB (which it sorely needs) and will be retuned to 11.9:1 on the Air/fuel. I expect to see the car making around 460 rwhp (or more) at 13psi.

well that kind of scares me a little. I would buy long tubes or the midllengths but like i said the shorties are legal. And i already shelled out like 300 bucks for a midpipe last year. I dont want to throw it away. NOW you have me thinking. :bang:

Save up until you can do the more logical of the two choices. As much of a pain as header installs are on 4.6L cars, you will only want to do it once. If you dont do it yourself, it will be quite expensive to have it done right. Save up the cash until you can do something like a set of BBK Longtubes, and a BBK short Catted H/X-pipe to match. When you do get them, you can sell your other midpipe to help offset the cost. :nice:

by the way, when you do get ready to do headers on your car, use factory manifold gaskets, and stage 8 locking header bolts. Do it right the first time! :nice:

Man am i cinfused as to what to do now. I def hear what you guys are saying about the long tubes, and i know they are the better option as far as power but its really not an option because i would'nt be able to get a sticker. And i liked the jba shorties because they are stainless steel. I'm trying to keep the whole exhaust stainless. I really have some thinking to do now. :bang:

Why can you not get the car inspected with long tubes? I can't see how a state can make them illegal. You do have the right to mmodify your car using quality aftermarket parts. (see this) The BBK should be 50 state smog legal. As long as you get a catalytic midpipe, there should not be a problem?
Long tubes are for "off-road purposes only" in most states. Some states have visual inspections in addition to smog tests, and if they see LTs you fail. Most states just check for cats, and thats how most people can put LTs on their cars.

BTW, not to deter you guys from JBAs, but you might want to check the pics out in this thread I started on T&Js forums.

The JBAs are still on my list as I hope this is an isolated case of a bad set making it through QC. Tim at T&Js response is enough for me. His car made wicked numbers with the JBAs so they can't be that much worse than LTs and I'll get my ground clearance back. I'm going to hold out for a while though. I want to see some more feedback about the BBKs.

Perhaps It's just a variation in the laws from state to state, but BBK's website (like many others) state that only non-catalytic midpipes are for "off road use" only. A long tube setup with a catalytic midpipe is completely legal in ALL 50 states. Only the non-catalytic midpipes are illegal in most states. Perhaps you should check with the local DMV or a local inspection station to make absolutely certain. It doesn't make any sense that you can't put on long tubes with a catted H-pipe. If the law really does forbid you to add long tubes in Mass, you need to be writing John Kerry a letter.
