Question on replacing door weatherstripping

I need to replace the weatherstripping around my driver side door on my 93 GT. It has worn badly at the bottom and separated in places. I have bought the new weatherstripping and 3m adhesive. I have searched the forums and Google and I have found a little information, but I wanted to get some feedback from users that have done this. Do I just remove the old weatherstripping, try to get the old glue off and put on the new. Any gotchas I might run into or any tips.

I don't think you need any adhesive.You just loosen or remove the interior trim around the door opening and pull the old stuff off. Then you just install the new weather stripping. Where did you buy your weatherstripping? I bought a kit for the hatch and both doors from 5.0 Resto at the 40th anniversary event in Nashville. I haven't installed it yet, because I am waiting until I get it painted. I am curious to know how well they fit.

I bought the kit from Texas Mustang
(Mustang 1979-1993 Body Weatherstrip - to dr Cpe or Hatchback Reproduction F3RR-O6120708-A $19.95).
It looks identical to the old weatherstripping. I can see glue where the old is pulling off, how come I don't have to glue the new one back on ?

Hey 66,
You DO want to use glue. If not it'll end up coming off. When you take off the old door seal you'll also want to clean the surface using a denatured alcohol. Put the weaterstrip adhesive on the weatherstrip in the little groove and install on the car. Really easy. Hope this helps.

I need to do the exact same thing! I'm going to change both sides at the same time. They are beginning to look a little dry-rotted. I also have an annoying leak comming into the plastic trim that runs the length of the inside of the car, right under the windshield. Do you guys think this is my sunroof (the drain hole for the sinroof is not plugged) or the windshield seal at the top?

I did mine in my coupe last year and a few years ago i did mine in my 89 gt. I never saw any adhesive and never used any adhesive. it NEVER came off. once you pull off the old one, just put it on inch by inch and at the end you will have some left over so you will need to cut it. there is a metal strip inside of the rubber that you cant see so either use some tin snips or some good pliers with cutters on it. It doesn't come with any adhesive because you dont need any adhesive. I asked around before I did the first one and I never heard anyone say you had to use it. I did find one guy who wanted to use glue so he did. Not necessary though. never had a leak and it never moved or came off after going on!

The glue might have been there where the previous owner could have tried to glue the pieces back after they started coming loose. I will probably find out more as I take the old stuff off. Thanks for everyones help.

Its pretty basic, I didnt use any glue and mine is fine. It just popped in.

i agree, i did my hatch and the doors w/ no adhesive and it's been on now for a year.

cool..sounds easy enough! I gotta do my doors & hatch..my doors are so bad I used to be able to hear the wind rushing through with the windows up...that was before I installed my exhaust

I did mine a while back, you only need to glue where the 2 ends meet. no need to glue the whole thing, it will stay on

i did both my hatch and doors with the kit from 50resto... fits perfect, with just a little bit extra... no adhesive, just installed right back on... great thing

Just finishing installing. No need for glue. It was pretty easy, I had a hard time getting the top back corner, other than that went smooth. I did have to trim about 6 inches off. Made a big difference for $19.99

Aye, no need for glue. You will need a large torx bit to loosen or even remove the seat belt bracket on the pillar to make things easier. The scuff plates need to be removed as well as the a pillar plastic trim. I also needed to readjust the striker post a little on mine, but as always, YMMV.

Actually just did mine 2 weeks ago. Bought the kit from 50resto. The adhesive is already in the weatherstrip. Just loosen all the interior panels and remove the scuff plate. Pull the old strip off and clean the body where the new one sits, then push it on. It was too easy. I did the window channels at the same time.
