I took off the metal ID tag thing off of the rear end because I was curious as to if it would tell me a gear ratio. Well, I scraped off all the grime and it did say "2.80" then a space and a bunch of other numbers. Does this tag tell gear ratios? If so, my ratio must be 2.80:1?

By the way, I hope to be pulling the engine sometime this weekend.

Yes, that code is the ratio of the rear end.

Above that should be the code for the model of the axle. If it is a WCZ-E it is a standard rear end. If it is a WDJ-B then it is a posi. The numbers to the right of the ratio are the build date, and the plant code, in that order.

bull999999, thanks, but that is 1969-70. This rear end is out of a 1966 Mustang.

Or are the codes the same?

It seems that codes are the same at least in my case. That chart had the code for my diff in the 65 Stang. What's the code on your tag?

I have found that codes change from year to year. If you would like, I can tell you how to find the ratio.
Codes might change but ID tags on rearends don't use a code to state the gear ratio they simply stamp the ratio. If it says 2.80 8 it is an 8" ring gear with a ratio of 2.80:1....2.80 9 would be a 9" ring gear with 2.80:1 gear ratio etc. This nomenclature was used for decades and never changed with removable carrier type rearends. If it had been 2L80 8 it would have been an 8" ring gear with a 2.80:1 gear ratio with a locking carrier (posi).

Thanks, but I was commenting on codes.

And you said you could help him find the ratio if he liked and I was simply pointing out that there are no codes to decipher in order to determine gear ratio as listed on the tag. I just thought your reply was a little unclear and implied that the codes had something to do with the gear ratio when they do not. It's all good! :D

Yea, I was just going to educate him just in case in the future the tag was missing by doing the rotating the wheel and counting the rev of the drive shaft vs wheel rotation :nice: method.
