I have a question about how I should go about restoring my trunk. I have sandblasted all the rust off and now I am trying to decide how to protect it from further rust.
I will be putting two subwoofers for my sound sytem in and would like to undercoat it for rust prevention and for better sound.
Could I use Rust-o-lium Etching Primer then coat it with Undercoating or should I use something like POR-15?

Thanks

You can go either way, with a good automotive etching primer, then I would top coat it with paint, NOT undercoating.:nonono:

Your other choice of using POR-15 is also good, but be sure to follow their directions and use the metal prep first! After you POR-15 your trunk you could either leave it like that, or with some prep top coat it too.

There have been several threads about trunks in the past, you might want to do a search and review them for some good ideas to "dress" up yours!:nice:

Thanks a lot for the response. Do you happen to know if I can get POR-15 at Autozone or an equivalent car shop?
Also for better bass and sound quality should I paint over etching primer then put undercoating? Or skip undercoating and do some sound-deadening matting or something like Dynamat?

Thanks a lot for the help. I am 16 and am new to all this! :)

Eastwood has some really great stuff that you can paint on. It used to be called "corroless" but they've chagned the name. Anyway, get their catalogue and call them. They're also really good on the advice over the phone. You can then get paint and clear for it from them also.

As far as I know, you have to order POR-15 via the internet. That's how I've gotten it, and it works well as long as you follow their directions. :nice: Eastwood also makes some good products in the rust-proofing / finishing line......:nice:

I wouldn't put undercoating inside the trunk AT ALL! It is designed to protect the undercarraige from moisture and road debris, and offers little or no sound deadening. Besides the fact it would more than likely remain soft, gooey and tarry on the inside of your trunk. :notnice:

You could get replacement "stock" sound deadener mats for your car, but they are pretty much limited to the trunk floor / top of the gas tank. With Dynamat you could go nutz and custom cut and fit it through out your trunk! :nice:

Wow. Thanks a lot for the fast responses!
Matter of fact I have an eastwood magazine right here on my floor. I looked at their Rust-Encapsulator which I am guessing is what you mean. I think I'll just order that in spray cans for just a trunk job because after googling it I found good results about it.
Thanks for warning me about the undercoating. I already bought it before, and it is made by dupli-color (I have tried 3M and thiers worked well before), so I was going to try it as it says you can use it in your trunk for 'sound' purposes. I'll do it right though and get eastwood than I'll probably try this matting I found on eBay called Fatmat.
It sounds good. Have any of you happened to try it before? It seems cheaper per sq ft than Dynamat, which I'm guessing is just because Dynamat is a big name.
Thanks again!
