I've been shopping for a new car for a few months now and I'm not closer to making a decision now than I was when I started. Recently I narrowed my search down to three cars: Mustang GT, BMW 325i, or Subaru STI. I've been thinking long and hard about this and I've nearly elimanated the STI, reguardless of it being the fastest, simply because 5 years from now after I've finished grad school I'm not going to want to pull up to a job interview in a car with a 3 foot wing on the back. The AWD is nice, the interior is great, sound system is good, handling is awesome, it's got more than enough power to make a happy DD, it just looks to immature for me to be driving 5-6 years from now.

Then we come to the BMW. It looks great, has 4 doors, lots of luxory, quite a bit lacking on the power/fun to drive factor. This would be the winner if it wasn't for the cost of repairs. When the warrenty runs out on that car I'll have to decide between getting screwed by repairs or just ponying up for a new BMW every 5 years (not going to happen). So it's basically elimanated.

This brings me to the Mustang. I know these are 3 very different cars but I've looked at just about everything on the market right now and these are the three that I've liked the most. The Mustang has nice power, fun to drive, leaps and bounds above the older style Mustangs in fit and finish, the sound system is amazing and it has a lot of really awesome features not found in a lot of other cars. It gets comperable gas mileage too, plus the fact it runs on regular instead of premium. The downside is it's a RWD V8 and a manual transmission (I refuse to own an auto Mustang). So when winter rolls around, do I want to be in another 300+ tq rear wheel drive? It's not as big an issue now as it was before. I moved from the country into the city so the roads get cleared a lot quicker.

Enough of my rambling. Here's my question:

For those of you who bought new Mustang GT's how have you liked them so far? Do you have any major complaints? What's bugging you about the car and do you have any regrets about buying it?

Thanks for reading my long post, any input is appretiated.:flag:

I have an '06 GT and flat out love it!
I test drove an '04 (my wife wanted to prove I couldn't fit in a Mustang), and the new Stangs are so much roomier.
It's got great looks. Not a day goes by without someone commenting on how nice it looks. A real head turner.
Plenty of power, and easily modified if you want.

The only problem I've had, is a couple of times at the gas pump, the pump auto kicks off early, way before full.
I have heard some others have this problem now and then as well, while others don't.
Doesn't happen at all pumps.
Quick fix was to hold the nozzle sideways when this occurs, fixes it for me.

You may or may not regret buying one of those other cars.
I do not think you'll have that problem with a GT.
The hardest thing for you will be trying to wipe that mile-wide grin off of your face as you drive. :D

Oh, I almost forgot......I NEED MORE COWBELL!

I have a 2005 GT and Just love the car. The only way I could buy the car was to use it for my work vehicle so I can Retire her in 5 years and have it as my Toy/Hobby after I get a new vehicle. Thus I drive it daily, bring it to construction sites, and this car ain't no Princess. I can't get enough of her and I think you should just do what you have to to get one.

I second the above posts. I have had my 2005 GT for 3 months now and I still find myself turning back and looking at it after I have parked it and I am walking away (it looks that great!). Of course looks are subjective, but I think it is much more distinictive and better looking than the Bimmer. Of course it is also a blast to drive. The sound from the exhaust when you hit the throttle to pass other cars is amazing. I agree that the stereo system is great (although others seem to disagree) and I really like the looks of the interior. The one major problem I have had is with the fuel tank as mentioned above. This can be a major pain if you go to a gas station with long fuel pump nozzles. However, my biggest regret is that I wimped out and got an automatic...

pulling up in for an interview isn't going to go any better in a mustang than in an STI. You don't have to worry very much about huge snow storms all winter in Kentucky. So AWD isn't essential.

If you're just graduating, you don't need the luxury of a BMW just yet; hell, I'm not even sure how you're able to afford a new car right after graduation, but you don't want to spend it all on maintenance.

The mustang is the cheapest, it's the cheapest to maintain, and it'll probably just as fun as an STI. Incredible aftermarket support, thought it won't drop the panties as quickly as a bimmer, so you'd better be a smooth talker. =)

Coming on this board, you know what we're all going to say. Test drive 'em all; I factor fun factor and cost to your disired ratio.

Ive had my mustang since oct 19th, drove it for a week and a half and had to park it. We get snow early here. Ive got about 500 miles on it, and i just love it. the interior is awesome. the sound of the exhaust, and the stereo are great. Ive got the shaker 1000, well worth it.
I cant say enough about this car. I look at it in the garage everyday. I will never drive the car in the winter, its unreal what winter salt and roads do to a vehicle. good luck with your choice.

I know this is a thread about GTs, but let me say if you get any NEW Mustang you won't be disappointed. I love everything about my V6. It's damn fun to drive (even with the auto :nice: ) and I hear they actually handle very well in the snow. At least compared to the older ones. I don't know much about the other cars you mentioned so I may be alittle biased.:p

crod75,

I know the feeling when you walk away from a car so beautiful and that you bought with your hard earned money. You just have to look. :nice:

Out of curiousity I think I'm gonna test drive a GT one day just to experience the awe and the mystery of raw AMERICAN V8 power. :flag: :flag: :flag:

In the BMW's defense, I can almost guarantee it will have less problems in the long run than the others, even after the warranty period, and all new BMWs come with a 5 yr full maintenance warranty (or is it 3 yr? I forget). And the ~15000 mile oil change interval makes the expensive oil changes about the same as the others in the long run, too.

The 325i won't be as powerful as a V6, though. The 330 would be about the same power/weight, but then, of course, you are jacking the price up some more.

I made the switch from a 330xi to the V6 in large part due to the loan cost (long story), and the fact that I really didn't lose much in terms of being fun to drive.

It is 4 years / 50,000 miles. Warranty & maintanence.

But I wouldn't over state post warranty reliability. After the warranty runs out you may be shocked at how expensive parts & even minor repairs are at your friendly BMW dealership.

I've only had my '06 GT less than a week, so I've not had it that long. But my first impressions are very good. I have a company car, so it's basically a weekend toy. I've had numerous 442s, GTOs, etc. over the years, and I have to say that as an overall package, I like the Mustang better than any of them. It rides better, handles better, gets better fuel mileage, and is almost as fast.

As far as comparing the 3 cars you mentioned, I'd have to choose the Mustang. As you said, the Subaru is too boy-racerish and looks a little immature. The BMW is probably a good car, but at least around here, resale value is questionable. And repairs and general maintenance are high. The Mustang is easier and cheaper to maintain and repair. It has classic looks that will never go out of style. And if you're so inclined, mods are plentiful. I think it's a hands-down decision for the Mustang.
