UPDATE:

Well, talked to my mananger and decided to show him the chips. He says he doesn't advise getting it repaired anyway because the body shop we use really sucks. He also says to him it looks like average ol' rock chips and I must have real bad rock luck with my car. Well...don't know where to go from here. He did give me a bottle of the Ford touch up paint but I don't know how to use and am not sure if I want to.

TO TEST FOR PAINT FAILURE:


1. take a piece of making tape, and lay it over the affected areas.

A. it peels the paint off--you have a paint failure

B. it does nothing--you may NOT have a paint failure

2. take it to the car wash and use the pressure washer right up next the the paint chips. be careful, if it is a really good one, it could also dent your car, but i doubt the car wash has that good of a sprayer....

A. the paint flakes off like the shell of a hard boiled egg--you have a paint failure

B. the paint adheres to the car, and not more flaking--you may NOT have a paint failure.

if this does not peel the paint off, i would say in my professional opinion that you dont have a problem, just bad luck.

if it does peel the paint off, take it back to the same dealer and show him the huge bare spot where you paint used to be, he will warranty it. (dont tell him how you got it to peel.)

the manager said that the shop he uses sucks. GO TO ANOTHER SHOP. dont go to a shop that someone openly tell you SUCKS. find another dealership to go to.

If you have a good dealer, they should get you a bottle with your purchase. After all, you paid for a car to look good for a long time.

My wifes 05 Camry is the same way today we are taking it to the dealer and voiceing our opinion.

Poor paint job I say, or been repainted.

That's because your wife's Camry was built in Kentucky and NOT in Japan. All the current 06 Camry automatics have transmission problems. I wouldn't touch a Camry with a 10 foot pole. I would rather own a Mustang than a Camry.

So Pliskin,
Did you ever resolve the paint problem with your 05 Mustang? What did you end up doing to fix the bad paint on your car. If I were you, I would of traded that car in at the first sign of the paint chipping problem. It makes no sense in keeping a car with chipping paint. You can never fix that type of problem correctly unless you strip the entire car of all of its mouldings, bumpers and weatherstripping and repaint the car just like it was painted at the Ford assembly plant. Anything less than that would result in a 3rd class paint job. You are better of to get rid of the car and buy another brand new Mustang.

Man, the subject of this thread just makes me sick. For the $$ that these cars cost the paint should last at least ten years if it is properly cared for. The original factory paint on my 96 Cobra is nearly flawless and still looks brand new; at 80,000 miles there are two small stone chips on the entire car. And I live one block from the Atlantic Ocean.
Just my opinion, but once a car travels through the paint booth its value significantly decreases. You may know that it was repainted because of inferior quality factory paint (something we shouldn't even think of having to contend with given the technology these days), but whether the guy you're trying to sell it or trade it to believes you is another thing. I know that I wouldn't buy one that had been repainted.
I really hope that when my 07 gets here I don't have this problem. Othewise I can assure one and all that the selling dealership will wish they never saw me.

I just bought my car about 3 weeks ago and already have stone chips on each door. I got a clear bra fitted to the hood and front bumper and while I was driving there to get it fitted I picked up another stone chip on the hood. Luckily the installer touched that one up before fitting the bra.

Does anyone know of a place where it's possible to get these chips repaired professionally without having the get the whole door painted ? Car is an 08 GT in black.

I had the same problem with my dealer on a older mustang (92). The paint was chipping off, but the dealer said "rock chips will do that". So I took it to the car wash (wand wash) and blew off a whole zip lock baggy of paint. Took it back to the dealer. He had nothing to say other than, "when can you bring it in to be repainted". By the looks of it, the front fenders were repainted (rather poorly, not preped correctly) because of a bad orange peel condition on the original paint job as this is what showed through under the paint that came off at the car wash.
