5.0 vs 4.6

You better shuffle shift your ass off...

Your car is not favored in this matchup. I see the 4.6 beating you to the finish line

You are heavier
You have a crappy (if stock) transmission

You do have more torque than him

You basically have two stock cars..... Maybe it's time to advance your timing

like they say on pinks I think you need to negotiate for some lengths here buddy .....I see it being dead even till a 1000 feet and then the 4.6s rpms getting the best of ya .......half to one car at quarter mile mark .....

DMAN302 I HAVE ONE OF THESE CHIPS THE ONLY REASON IS A FRIEND OF MINE SOLD IT AFTER HE WRECKED HIS STANG AND I GOT IT FOR $30 AI'NT NO WAY I'D GIVE $230 FOR ONE. BUT MY QUESTION IS IT BEST FOR ME TO RUN 10* TIMING AND THE CHIP WILL ADVANCE, BUT IF I RUN 14*WHAT WILL IT DO. ITS A JET CHIP ALL INFO IN SIGNATURE.
If it runs fine...leave it be, but I wouldn't be throwing anymore timing at the car, I'd keep it as is. However I would be curious to see how well it runs without the mailorder chip in place and you setting the timing, I would look to see how the performance and overall drivability/fuel milage is in comparison.

Foxstang9050; get that gear set in place...I'd go 3.55 or 3.73 but that's just me, alot of guys would plop in a 4.10 gearset...mmm in my opinion, and my opinion only, that's a little steep for a daily driven car. Stiffen that frame with a set of subframe conectors..won't help performance in any huge way, but will really aid the ride and stability of the car. I installed a set of FMS tubular SFC on my wifes 04GT vert the second day it was home...they work! Now I mentioned a shifter...obviously your auto and I was a little off there, but if you really want to wake that car up and make it dance...look into a converter and shift kit for the tranny...with the gears in place the car will be quite entertaining. However I should note: keeping the car as is and not being the fastest on the block is JUST fine too..these are great cars, they don't all need to set records. My 88 is HUGE fun modified, but so is my wifes..stock down to the filter...04GT

Ok, first off, you have two chances at winning. First chance, he can't drive. Second chance, he has spin issues due to launching too high. I will defend you on the chip part. MM&FF did a test on one about 3-4 yrs. ago and they were very surprised at the power increase. I think it was near 10rwhp gain and they said it felt much better all throughout the rpm range. If you get gears, get 3.73s. That and a torque converter will get him I think.

my mark 8 has the 32v 4.6 dual overhead cam motor in it. from what i understand it pushes 290 bhp. i must say that is a very well designed motor. i just hate working on it. the 5.0 in my stang is much more user friendly even with all the mods.

96 had 215hp.

I was just going to say that.. I think the '97 was rated the same and then 225 for '98, but I don't have my book in front of me so I'm not 100% on that.

Either way be glad he's not got a 99+ PI car, or PI stuff on his '96 or he will really open the margin of victory.

The main problem I see is your automatic, but with some $ thrown at it, the auto can be made equal if not superior to the manual. I think it'll be a good race, but I think he'll edge you out in the end.

One thing + and negative about a chip and an automatic equipped transmission car. The chip will increase the line pressure for the tranny as well as adjust the shift points. Therefore the shifts are tighter, harder and quicker and at better points in the RPM range than before. Therefore it will be noticeably better, especially when combined with the additional timing etc. In my opinion its not worth messing with on a manual transmission car, because the gains in the transmission dept are N/A and timing is easy to advance on a 5.0.

The negative: A chip will wear the transmission faster. Ford's transmission components are designed for the low line pressure and sloppy shifting pieces and settings. Hence the "Slush-O-matic" nickname I use. I had a T-bird with the 4R70W and it was the same way. The best way to do the same thing as the chip that will not wear the tranny as hard is work the converter and add a shift improvement kit.

Yep, 96-97 were the same hp rating. The 98's in my "history" with the optinal 3:27 gear ratio and t45 tranny are the quickest marginally compared to the 94-98's.

I wouldn't read too much into any magazine articles. A lot of the time they will "set-up"(retard timing, tuning, etc.)the car so the chip will make power.

99+ i believe came with 245 hp (not sure on tq)

and a chip will do nothing for a fox's AOD as far as shifts and pressure goes... the computer and the transmission have no connection whatsoever

You can't tune those chips. They do not set up the cars. That's BS.

Euphoric, the 99+ PI cars came with 260hp, and 300lbs-ft. torque.

I think by his statement he was trying to relay the idea that the cars general settings would be set at the lowest possible settings..example 6-8 degrees of timing, then bump the timing a few degree's..though still within stock spec, but allow the chip to advance it even further. The test would show the car making a substantial gain because of the dramatic jump in timing from the "stock setting" to the chip in test. If you really think they don't "play" with the cars to get the HP they want to see, then your quite mistaken...magazines love to help pump up the "sponsors" numbers if it helps the relationship between the two. An excellent example was the SHAMELESS "test" one magazine put together for the BBK crew..that was a damn joke.

foxstang9050 we got many idiots around my area like you..

I got somebody who has 95GT VERT auto..

he told me he has 2 superchips and a CAI a few things .. long story short he told me he was pushing 400hp.. blah blah

rant.. but I cant stand ppl like you that buy into all these stupid numbers.. ruin the mustang name with your mouths and stupidity with "racing chips" & "cold air intakes"
Maybe a little harsh...bad day at work?? He's young, loves his car, seems eager to learn, I don't see how his responses deserve being referred to in a negative manor. We ALL have alot to learn, I'm more often than not surprised by how much I have yet to learn everyday.
