Hi everyone i'm new and I am thinking about purchasing a 1999-2000 mustang v6. The car will have 100k miles. Should I buy it or not? will it least me a few years? what do I need to look out for when buying a used mustang? are their common issues or problems that i need to know? are mustangs reliable? Is the stereotype that american cars are less reliable then japanese cars true? thanks in advanced.

If it was well taken care Of shouldn`t be a problem......The one thing is that V6`s are getting Exhaust MANIFOLD LEAKS-so check that for sure...other than that Have no Clue what else to look for-If you are not CAR SAVVY get a mechanic to check it for you and If you are SAVVY as soon as you Pop the HOOD you`ll know what to look for +Listen to the Engine.
Good Luck,
By the way How much is that gonna cost you for a 1999-2000 V6 ?

Don't listen to middle-aged people. They grew up at a crappy time in American Automotive history. This is why I don't believe all the BS on Consumer Reports. All of their statistics are based on subscriber's reports, and their subscribers are a VERY biased group(probably mostly white males 35-50). Fact of the matter is that modern American cars are just as reliable as Japanese cars(The Chevy Cavalier might be an exception). Supposedly, the Europeans are trailing but to me it's all heresay because I've never actually seen substantial proof.

Think of it this way. We Mustang owners are a devoted group. We beat the living crap out of our cars. But they keep taking it, and we keep buying more. Why would anyone go back to buying a Make/Model that has given them nothing but headaches?
I've also seen this devotion in Camry owners. But how much abuse do you think Camry owners put their cars through? I bet I could kill a Toyota in one year after driving it the same way I drive my Mustang(I've killed my share of Import CV joints). But my car keeps taking it, and has been for the past 4 years. And that's AFTER being a rental car for one year.

So to answer your question...Yes...they are damn reliable.

2nd most common problem is rust on the exhaust system near the passenger side cat. This is caused by condesation from the A/C dripping onto the pipes.

I've personally been having this problem with my rear tires. They like spin if I floor the car from a stop.

Actually, Consumer Reports rated the Mustang "the most reliable American car" for 2004, which is the same as the '99 model (I know you know that '66. That was for the new guy's benefit if he didn't already know that. :) )

The breakdown of problems per 100 cars for 2004 was:

Asian: 12
American: 17
Euro: 21

Mustang: 5

So, for 2004, according to Consumer reports, the Mustang was OVER TWICE as reliable as your average Asian car and over FOUR times more reliable than your average Euro car. Pretty good if you ask me.

On another note, between my family (3 Mustangs) and close friends, we own:

'93 2.3
'99 Cobra
'00 3.8
'00 3.8
'01 GT
'01 GT
'01 Bullitt
'02 GT
'03 Cobra

... and no significant problems. In fact, very few problems at all.

So, I'd say they're pretty reliable.

My Family-
Me - '66(getting V8 swap with '98 5.0)
- '01 V6(might start modding more if I can get a 2nd job)
Little sister - '01 V6 Premium (Bone stock and like new - only 10k miles)
My parents don't like the idea of small cars, but my dad does want to change the looks of his '01 Grand Marquis, or trade it for a Crown Vic Sport or Marauder(I'm pushing him towards a Marauder, but Crown Vic Sport prices are pushing back since he just cares about looks
).

My Roommates
-'99 GT
-'94 V6
-'66 rusted out project car sitting dormant in our garage.
We also have two C4 autos, and 3 302 engines in various stages(block, short block, and fully assembled) around the garage.

So whatever town I sleep in, my Mustang sleeps next to several other Mustangs and all sorts of cool Ford stuff.

What I ment to write was rob, not rocka(WTF was I on)? Anyways, how come no pics with all these stangs?

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant... oh, and I don't know why we haven't taken more pics. The best I have is my '00 w/ my friend's '03 Cobra and my g/f's HD-150... and my '00 with my friend's '03 Cobra and my other friend's '02 GT. I guess it's just tough to get a lot of people together with clean-ish cars at the same time.
