On my 76 Cobra I noticed that the tube from the heat shield to the air cleaner is missing due to they are on opposite sides from each other. The heat shield where the tube connects is on the passenger side and the air cleaner connecting is on the driver’s side. The air cleaner looks completely stock and only fit one way. Could the air cleaner possible be off a different year or model? How is it supposed to be set up? I can't get a smog in California with out it. It' a 302 motor no A/C

thanks pete

The tube is for carb heat. Suppose to assist in engine warm up, but it's really there to help prevent carb icing. The irony is in most parts of Cali carb ice shouldn't be an issue.

Yes, the air cleaner could be completely stock from a different model. IIRC once I got a cleaner housing from a Granada that was the same low profile type unit as the IIs. I don't remember which side the intake was on, and I don't remember if I still have it.

Only things I can think of is for you to go bone yarding and find a low profile housing that fits, or can be cut and made to fit. Or bend the locating tabs so the housing can be positioned so the duct can be connected.

Is the housing aluminum?

If you are interested, I have an original 76 Cobra air cleaner assemebly, with all the proper fittings and ports on it. I even have an NOS motorcraft element for it. I'd like to sell them since I no longer have that car, but very few people are looking for OEM parts nowadays. PM me if you are interested.

Sounds to me like plentino's got an air cleaner from a 6cyl car.
Sal, I would think that air filter would be in demand. Seems to me (from my memory) that it was kind of a unique size and was used for just a couple of applications. I know the oil filter for the 302 sure was unusual at the time!

I don't remember which side the V8s connection is on, but the V6 car I'm putting back together rightnow is on the driver's side. I would imagine it'd be easy to mix up the V6 and V8 aircleaners since they both used the same autolite/motorcraft 2100 series 2bbl carbs. I recommend checking out a V8 Granada/Monarch too.:nice:
