Hey guys i would like some of you to help me out :D I'm getting ready to place n order with Jegs, for Afr heads.
I'm going with stud mount because i see most of the people like them better over pedstal mount.
What would be the best Gaskiet set to get for top end any part numbers ?????? :) (I dont want nothing cheap when it comes to gaskiets)
Witch Push rods to get part numbers and ARP head bolt kit any good ????
i also need rockers i hear some people use scorpion's and crane i'm going with 1.6 ratio
plus is my steeda 19 cam be fine with those heads and would i have any clearance issues???

So what do you guys recommend

Thanks

First, before you order from Jeg's call Kevin at http://www.kskustoms.com for a price on in stock AFR's.

DEFINITELY get stud mount without a question. Don't even think of getting pedestal mount if you don't already have rockers and such.

Use a felpro 1250 intake gasket (trim it to match the ports) and a 1415 header gasket. For the head gaskets, you have a number of choices. You really shouldn't buy the pushrods until after you have the heads on the engine and torqued down because you may need a different length than stock. BE SURE TO CHECK THE ROCKER GEOMETRY! The scorpion rockers are very difficult to get to fit under our stock VC's, so many go with the smaller bodied magnum rockers. You shouldn't have any clearance issues other than the VC's, but its always best to check just to make sure due to tolerance stacking.

I agree with everything Paul said.

One more thought about rr's ..............

I don't see how you would ever get Scorpion stud mount's to fit under our oem vc's. The Scorpion's are big & beefy so more room is needed.

I use em and run older Fox vc's with mine.

Really nice heads ... you're gonna have a big ole :D smile :D when you pull em out of the box ;)

Thanks for the info that's what i neded to hear :nice: I know that i will have a big smile on my face when the head arrive :D But the biggest smile i have when i put them on :nice:

Thanks guys :SNSign:

i believe u guys recommend hardened pushrods, and u guys usually say the stock length is the size needed. i dont know what else could effect the size needed tho assuming the car is untouched from the factory ...with no previous machine work on the heads or block

You will need hardened pushrods if your run stud mount since the rocker is kept from rotating side to side by the guideplates that the pushrod runs through.

These is a LOT that can effect pushrod length. If the head gasket is a different thickness, if the valves in the heads are longer/shorter than the stockers, if the rocker location of the new head isn't exactly where the stock on was, if the base circle of the cam isn't exactly like stock, etc. There are so many things that can effect it that if you get get the stockers to work concider yourself lucky. I had to run 6.300" on my car with my pedestal mount AFR 165's on a stock untouched shortblock. Also, don't forget that it's not just the preload here that you need to worry about, its the geometry of the valvetrain and the contact size and location on the valve tip from the roller tip of the rocker.

Hey Paul i just called Kevin at http://www.kskustoms.com and the price that he gave me for the heads was $1325 out the door $25 cheaper then jegs so i will still shop around and see if i can get it cheaper if not i will place and order with him on monday :D
I tryed to get them for 1300 but he said 1325 was the best he can do
we will se what hapens monday
o one more thing what spark plugs are good to run with those heads ???????

Thanks Derek.N

Good deal Derek, I knew Kevin would treat you right. I can't say enough good things about him, his service, and prices. Make sure to ask him about all the other things you need too like rockers and such. He may be able to get you a better deal as a "package."

When i do heads i want to be able to do it all in one day, i dont wanna hafta order pushrods i cant afford downtime as this is my only means of transportation. So i guess i need to find a place locally that has different length of hardend pushrods...eh i think CHP is one of the few places i can think of. Also it will get done in one day because i will have my best friend who is a mechanic do it on at his shop. who already told me it will take up most of the day but he says heads on 302s are easy. atleast in comparisson to when he built his 4.6 in his 96 cobra :)

H/C/I is a pretty big project

Lots of little things can or could go wrong :bang:

I don't wanna seem like I'm tryin to pee in anybody's Cheerios :nono:
but
You might wanna have some back up transportation .........

Just In Case ;)

Sounds good! I figured you would end up buying Kevin after checking around. Hopefully you can help spread the word about him as I have been trying to do, he definitely deserves it as he was top notch to deal with IMO.

I hope the pushrods you ordered are the ones that you need. :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a pair of AFR 165's for sale. Heads are fresh from the machine shop. They recieved a 3 angle valve job,new valve seals, converted to stud mount and were surfaced. Heads need absolutely nothing and are ready to bolt on. Reason for selling,I am building a 331 stroker now instead of a 306. Asking $1,000 obo. Also willing to possibly trade for a larger pair of aluminum heads. Thanks.

lol, thats the truth, it was alot bigger of a project than I expected it to be, had my car apart for over a month but that was because I was waiting on machine work...... It was alot of work tho, I worked on it after I got home from work for about 4 hours a night, and it was like a 3 night dis-assembly and like 4-5 night re-assembly + a little work on a saturday making the egr tube work =\. Now Im no expert so somewone who knows what there doing more than I did would of gone a whole lot faster, plus I ran into a few bumps along the road so yeah have another car to drive in-case somethin happens.

You should have a machine shop go over the heads when you get them. I bought some WP Windsor Sr's that were supposed to be "ready to bolt on". It turned out that they needed a valve job. I wasn't too happy but, they turned out to be killer heads on my 351.
