I'm new to the site and I need to buy a welder. I just purchases a 67' convertible. It's in bad shape. I'm looking at the lincoln 3200 HD (25A-135A) says it welds up to 5/16 with flux cored wire but I plan to use steel wire with gas. I just want to know if the 135 is capable of welding anything I need to weld on the car from frame rails to quarter panels. I plan to buy all new parts from NPD as almost everything on the car needs replacing. Thanks for any help.

Also if the welder says it weld from .24 to 5/16 will it still weld smaller metal?

Check out this thread: http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=667942 its on this forum.

IMO yes it is large enough to weld anything on a mustang, the frame rails on a stang (to my knowledge) are less then 1/4" thick so you should be fine. As far as wire selection and what it will weld you will have to look at each welder and what setting for the different wire sizes and types. The HOBART™ HANDLER 125 EZ from Tractor Supply (TSC # 3806489) can weld from 18 ga - 3/16 in with a flux core wire, but with the mig conversion it can weld 22 ga with a solid wire which is what you need to handle the 19 ga metal for floor pans and such even though it is rated at 30 amps and not 25 amps. Heres a link to Hobarts mig welders http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/mig/ and a link for the what I believe is the welder you pointed out http://content.lincolnelectric.com/pdfs/products/literature/e721.pdf look at the table on page 2 it shows the wire size/metal thickness/gas requirements. Other welders say the upper amp output should be 180 or so enable to weld 5/16th inch thick.

Clear as mud?
