I didn't take the pinion out, so it's still set to where the factory put it. Had I removed the pinion I would have to redo everything.

Not if he didn't remove the pinion gear, only if he put in a new gear set. And 9 times out of 10 if the new gear set is made by Ford the machining is exact enough that the same pinion shim can be used. It should be checked though and the backlash will always have to reset.smokin91' said:Dont you need a special tool to measure pinion depth and all that other fun stuff?

I started expalining to him what happened and before I finished my sentence he sais "let me guess, the two small gears fell out". He has seen it happen plenty of times and said the unit needs to be fully disassembled to get those gears back in.

Once I finish the front I'll post the results of my 5 lug conversion and 2003 Mach1 wheels on my 85 Capri. Thanks again.
