Do subwoofers need mounting?

Currently my subwoofer (it's either a 150 or 300 watt Pioneer if I remember correctly) is just floating around my trunk as I drive.

I was wondering if the subwoofer needs to be mounted to the floor of the trunk to get good use out of it?

The trunk of my 1990 LX has this huge piece of I guess you could call it some kind of cardboard that it "can" be mounted to I guess. But that huge piece of board that covers up the spare tire itself is loose and floats around. Does that matter? Do I now have to mount both of them to the car?

Buy a box, my friend. Subwoofers do best when fitted to matching enclosures. Most anything else is just hacking and will not yield decent results.

Oh, sorry. I meant that I had bought one of those subwoofer & box things. You know, where it's already in a box and you just put the box in your trunk.

Haha, I know it wont make noise if it's not in a box, I'm not that dummy.

I just need to know if I should mount it to the board thing.

A typical speaker box is moderately heavy and shouldn't be "hovering" about as you state. If you are carving corners or driving erratically, then perhaps you should think about strapping it in. I would not mount it to anything with the intention of it being permanent.

Mount your sub. That thing becomes a 60 pound bullet in the event of a collision. Seriously, people have been killed by tissue boxes left lying in the car. Don't depend on the rear seat to stop it. Even a bungee cord or some velcro beats nothing, but mount that ****er down.

unless its in a truck box im pretty sure it wouldnt fit through anyway, into the cabin.

A subwoofer speaker sitting in the trunk in no enclosure is doing nothing to add bass to your system.

they proved that wrong on mythbusters!

They tested with several 'common' objects, some realistic, some ridiculous:

Bobblehead: fell over, so no data

1kg Fire extinguisher: didn't do too much damage to the ballistics gel, but it put a dent in the extinguisher. It would probably hurt.

Subwoofer: subwoofer was a bit dented.

Hatchet: flew blade first into the ballistics gel target and embeded itself all the way through to the other side.

Bowling ball: awesome! ripped through the ballistics gel target and in slow mow you could see the ballistics gel wobbling in midair as it was pushed out the back of the box.

Kleenex box: accelerated up to 70mph for the Kleenex box. Didn't really do any damage, and at this point they already declared mythbusted.

Try straps or blocks to keep it from sliding around - what you use depends on its size and weight.
