Hey All,

As my preface.... I wish to repeat i'm not a mechanic and doing this is at your own risk. I am just describing what I did to install this as I found the lack of good referance material so I just want to share what I learned.

I decided to try my hand at installing a Air Fuel Gauge to fill the hole I have in my a-pillar pod. I chickened out at doing an electric fuel pressure because of cost and I dont want to play with fuel with my current auto skill set. Now Let me tell you this A/F install is easy as pie to do. If you have fat hands or not able to lay on your back on the door sill then you probably shouldn't do this. Oh and you will have to splice one cable on your computer.

I purchased the Auto Meter Phantom 2 1/16 A/F gauge. Now it has 3 major functions to help you become one with your machine.

1) it blinks alot and has different lights
2) if fills a hole in your empty pod
3) The wife or G/F will say are you happy now? do you feel like a man? is your P***S bigger now? and you will answer yes, yes, and yes

Ok now that the comedy is out of the way. Follow this howto to get the gauge into the pod and hooked up to the cars electrical. http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=699928

DONT FORGET TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY !!!

The black and Red cables are your power and ground. they have a weak thin gauge that I was not happy with but I made do. I hooked it into a fuse that goes on when your car is on and off when your car is off.

This is the fuse I plugged into, indicated with a green arrow

The purple wire needs to be hooked up to your cars oxygen sensor located in your computer system.

to get to your cars computer system you will have to remove the door sill on the passanger side and remove the kick panel located next to it. They both pull strait out. Underneath you will discover the hell that is the brains of your car.

The black and blue cable are for my subwoofer. Just disregard them. what you want to get to is the grey box underneath that rats nest of wires.

Now to take the computer out you have to unscrew the plate holding the 3 connection together with an socket wrench. You will also need to unplug the 3 connections. there is a smaller socket wrench you will need to unhook the white tab holding the computer in place. Lift the white tab to move the computer towards you. you will then need a 8mm socket to remove the bolt on the computers connector to release the computer.

Now flip the connector over, and use a flat head screwdriver to release the 4 black tabs on the connector. if everything is still too tight to get to you may have to cut some of the black electrical tape out of the way. Mind you the area you are working in is extremely tight and there is not alot of play with any of the wires. This is even when you remove some of the electrical tape.

now here is the scariest part of this install and this is the point of no return. Locate wire 87. I marked on the picture where its located there are red lines. the top red line is 79 move down and the last red line is wire 87.
THE WIRE YOU ARE MESSING AROUND WITH AND CUTTING IS RED WITH A BLACK STRIPE. If your car is different and you are unsure what to do just stop now! Now I used a scalpel and cut a little bit into the wire and removed some of the shielding. This is illustrated with some MS paint. I hooked the purple wire thru it and hooked it on.
The reason the wire looks green is because it is. The autometer purple wire is only like 3 feet long. you will need to get about 3 feet more wire and crimp them together.

electrical tape it alltogether nice and tight.

Now would be a good time to reconnect everything while its loose and test it.
the purple wire should make good contact with the red wire with the black stripe.
make sure the bolt on the connector is tight on the computer or your car wont start right.

if everything works then put the door sill and kick panel back in and admire your hand-i-work

Another great write-up on how to install a gauge. I followed your direction with the boost gauge, and now this one as well. Instead of cutting into the O2 sensor wire, I just used one of those tap-in connectors from radio shack
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2104093&cp
I found it to be less messy and it still fit in that black casing holding all the wires together.

You know I did the exact same thing @ radio shack and I asked for the stupid thing and the guy had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

The problem was I think was that I was calling them "vampire taps" and not the proper name.

oh well whatever :) Im just glad my write up was helpful

What exactly can you do with a narrow band O2 gauge? Wouldn't the needle just jump around constantly as you drive?

the question was already answered by me hehehehe

it has 3 major functions to help you become one with your machine.

1) it blinks alot and has different lights
2) if fills a hole in your empty pod
3) The wife or G/F will say are you happy now? do you feel like a man? is your P***S bigger now? and you will answer yes, yes, and yes

nah it has three uses.

1) when you accelerate, it lets you know by pegging the rich side.
2) when you decelerate, it lets you know by pegging the lean side
3) when youre idling or cruising, it lets you know by hovering in stoich.

so yeah, basically useless, seeing the above you already knew about since youre the driver. but later on when you get a wideband o2 controller that has a 0-1v output for a gauge or for the stock narrowband simulation, you can just hook it up.
