At the track, my damn shift knob came off so I couldn't put in 3rd, engine revved to 6000 (or close to that) by accident. Could that have done anything to the engine? It's working fine still, no knock or tick anywhere. I'll change oil again just to make sure. It pisses me off because I set my shift light at 4500rpm and I've NEVER gone pased 4800 with my 5.0L's....

one time when i had my old worn out stock engine running in my car. i was hot rodding it. i shifted hard to 2nd and went to go into 3rd and ACCIDENTLY shifted back into 1st. that was a bad deal. just start REVVING UP and boucing off the rev limiter hardcore. i shut the car off and it kept revving up. i was going like 60 something in 1st gear with 3.90s. didnt hurt anything though.

You're fine. I've bounced mine off the rev limiter many times and that's 6250.

Yep, same here. The limiter is at 6250 for a reason. The only way you can really overrev it is doing what foxfan did. Even though it has a rev limiter, it's not going to stop the momentum of the car from spinning the engine to the moon when you drop it into the wrong gear and let out the clutch.

Yah shifting at 4800 is definitely a bit low. You will still be making power a bit further up in the rpm range. Any mods on the vehicle? If you want to you could get a ignition box and set it to a rev limit so you never surpass it and will never have to worry about that again.. Plus the whole 'better/cleaner spark', etc.

As of now -- no you didn't hurt anything unless you laid into that sucker for like 5 minutes at redline.

I would atleast shift at 5200-5400. I am shifting my mostly stock cobra at 5500. The HP peak on the stock 5.0 is 4500 You will still make decent power up to 5200 or so. That will keep your rpm's in the power range better after you shift.

Damn 14.4 with a 2.3 60' on a basically stock mustang?? Thats pretty good!

I was hot rodding my car around last year and i had it floored...pushed in the clutch to shift to 3rd...and the pedal got stuck on the floormat, i pegged out the tach for a few seconds... (7k ++)
