Blown head gasket...ive finally left the denial stage and entered into acceptance. I had a milkshake oilchange, buring oil in the exhaust, and blew my radiator out and replaced it and its spewing exhaust. Questions now...is the Felpro gasket/bolt set from advance auto a good replacement? Is it very important to have my heads checked by a machine shop (i dont have much/any money since classes are starting next week) ? any tips or advice on parts/ install that isnt listed in the sticky write ups? thanks guys! i guess i will replace my main seal while in at it too..and rebuild my convertible top motor..and get it retuned...i hate cars

hehe, same exact thing that happened to me: milkshake oil, blown radiator, etc.. i feel for ya, man.

get yourself a set of ARP headbolts when you put them back on--only cost about $50 from summit. you will not regreat it.

i'd be ok w/ getting parts store gaskets--they usually carry some pretty nice ones, especially if you call around locally.

definitely have your heads checked, too.

1st and foremost, figure out why it blew... changing head gaskets repeatedly is not the best way to spend your week.

Then as said above:

Yes, get the heads checked out by a machine shop.

Why use parts store pieces when summit is key strokes away? Quality ARP fasteners would be the way to go, especially when boosted... i personally would throw some studs on it rather than bolts... but thats me.

well i have a jegs store 20 minnutes away so i usualy go with them.....It blew because im running 13 psi on a 6-8 psi tune...so i dont feel so bad for myself, i got away with it for about a year and then it went. Are the studs that much better, or is it just for ease of installation? And anyone else want to comment on getting my heads checked because i dont really want to spend another 300 bucks for that if i dont have to

oof, if you're boosted it's definitely time for studs, these motors notoriously lift the heads

Take the heads to Mike Rush at M&M Head Service, in Delaware. He's a good friend of mine and wouldn't steer you wrong.
You can also use Columbus Col-Weld on Harrisburg Pike. I "over ported" a GT40 iron head. I took it down there and showed it to Chet. He told me that I would have $175 in having it welded up. I think they would give them a once over for you for very little money.

Depending on how long it has run with the "milkshake" (brings all the boys to the yard.:rlaugh: ) in it, you may want to have a look at the rod and main bearings, too.

I'm in Columbus and if you need some E7's, I have a pair. Let me know if you need them.

I changed 4 sets in a month untill I learned.

do it right, and you wont have to worry.

#1 make sure you flush the oil an well, and do and extra oil change once your done!

#2 have your heads checked by a machine shop.....why waste the time and labor doing it twice?

#3 Order ARP head studs, felpro MLS gaskets.

Clean the surfaces perfectly, goto autozone and get some copper spray, spray both sides, 2 coats and install mls gaskets and arp studs....torque in 4 stages...end with 95ft-lb top and 90 bottoms....to allow for twist/streach...make sure you seal the bottom bolts well with rtv.

This combo held unbelieveable...I got a bad run of gas and got BAD knock at 10 psi and it survived fine......my tuner said he uses them on his race mustang, and if he lifts a head from knock, they will actually reseal!

yea afm pipe, i had that junk plastic one, i forget what brand, but i couldnt get it to fit so i bought the expensive one...then hit 13psi

Ah ok, I didn't see it in your mods and was wondering how you were getting that high of boost with the vortech inlet - figured you either had the powerpipe or your intake had the flow of a drinking straw. :D

I'd get some head gaskets, head bolts and lower intake gaskets. Don't forget oil, coolant, oil filter and coolant. Valvecover gaskets and header gaskets should be reusable unless they are torn up.

Need a powersteering pulley remover to get that bracket off the head?

BTW, i talked to M&M Head Service and they said it would cost from 180-240 out the door...is that a decent price?

I don't know what you're getting for that money. So, to opine on whether it is a decent price or not wouldn't be right. I can tell you that I've known Mike since high school (loooooong time) and I've never heard any bad pub. about him. He's a racer and has prolly forgotten more about heads and machine work than we all know, together. Just my opinion.

At the worst, $240 is good piece of mind, if you know they are "right".

Don and Rob at LaSota Racing have worked with Mike, some. Ask for their opinion.

im not too friendly with the guys from lasota...I went to them to get tuned when i first put the supercharger on and there was one problem and they couldnt tune it so i had to pay 400 and they said that once i fix it i they will tune it free (except for dyno time)..so i call them back in a few weeks and they bs'd me about it and wouldnt tune it so i've been shying as much business from them as i can
