I ordered a stage 1 CCW water pump from Stewart Components. Upon install, guess what I found.

That gasket fits my timing chain cover PERFECTLY....did they send me the wrong pump? What does that pump fit?

It bolts up, all the holes are right (as you can see) but it will NOT hold fluid. (yeah, I tried)

Well...the gasket they supplied matches the water pump. I wasn't paying attention the 1st time I installed it and just bolted it up. When I started to fill the radiator, it leaked like a Niagra Falls. So I thought maybe I just missed something. I went to AutoZone, bought a new set of gaskets (pump to plate, & plate to block), and took it back off. Well, the pump to plate gasket was fine. No issues there. However, when I laid the new plate to block gasket on there, I found that. Like I said, that gasket is right when I put it up on the timing chain cover.....and I'm guessing the reason it was leaking is that there was no effective seal around the water jackets....ya know....because they're not the same.

Now, this is what I ordered, part 16173, CCW rotation for serpentine belt, 86-93.

Does anybody know what Ford v8 has the same bolt pattern on the water pump but has the water jackets facing the other way? I'm thinking they sent me the wrong pump, or the wrong plate. :bang:

It looks to me like your gasket should be flipped on the pump. Then the ports should line up. I would assume the bolts would too. I would re-examine everything. I would also verify that it's for the correct year.
I tried flipping it every which way I could. Whenever I move ANYTHING, the bolt holes don't line up anymore. Not on the gasket, or on the plate. Also notice the two bolts that hold the plate to the pump....on the gasket, one of them is perfectly curving to the bolt, the left one is about 3/4" away from the bolt. Something is awry in waterpump town.

If you hold the water pump up to the timing chain cover will the water passages line up? If not, there is something wrong with the pump.

You say the current gasket you have matches up to the timing chain cover but sits on the water pump as pictured, which is definitly not going to work. Any chance you put the plate on backward on the water pump? You may be able to make a gasket but if those water passage don't line up you will have problems.

Also (I know its simple) do you have the old water pump you took off to compare too. If the old pump is the same as the new one then its a gasket issue if its different then its the pump.

Good Luck

yeah, pretty sure the old water pump is long gone. heh. but its not possible to put the plate on the other way for the same reason its not possible to flip the gasket around. Nothing lines up. So I'm in agreement that its the pump thats wrong.

No, the passages don't line up from the pump to the timing cover. Thats where I noticed the difference. So I guess its back to Stewart Components to figgure out what the crap happened. Thx dudes.

Thats just it. That gasket that I pictured is the one that mates to my timing cover. Based on the pictures that JerryD posted, this is my timing chain cover:

The right hand port is angled down and the left hand port is up and I have the 3 holes around each port.

This cover:

is what would fit the pump I have. Notice the two holes around the ports and they are facing the wrong direction.

Now, when I went to AutoZone and asked for the gaskets for an 87 Mustang 5.0 they gave me the one that fits my timing cover. Just not the pump....so the pump is wrong.

Thx for posting that Jerry, that clears EVERYTHING up.....on my end at least. Now I definitely have to get w/ Stewart Components and clear this up.

Just got off the phone w/ Stewart Components. Turns out they have 2 different backing plates for the water pump because of the difference in those timing chain covers. Basically, the guy told me that they used to send both....but hardly anybody needs the other one...so....they only send one. If you need the other one, call them and they'll send it to you free.

So.....thats taken care of then.
