ok where to begin...

About 4 days ago i was doing a little spirited driving (but no hard launching!) as i normally am very conservative with my driving. As i was doing so i bottomed out my car . i wasnt as pissed after i parked my car and looked underneath to find no visible damage of any kind It definitely had to have hit my cats but i didnt see any damage. Anyway so after a while i go back outside to run some errands and i start the car and i hear the engine bay making a louder than usual "chirping" sound. I didnt think anything of it at first so i just drive off. As I am driving i notice (especially in the lower gears) that everytime i would take my foot off the clutch i would also hear a faint "chirp" with a slight notchy feeling in my clutch foot. So at that point i am like "wtf mate?"

Fast foward to just an hour ago and the first stop sign i come to, I let off the clutch and it definitely felt like the clutch slipped on me. However i am not sure because this is the first time ive experienced something like this. I would associate the feeling to a pulsating feeling that lasted for 2 cycles. Now I am like "SOB!" but for the rest of the drive it never slipped again. But now with every go from a stop theres definitely a "chirp" that comes from somewhere in the car. I was able to get a nice piece of straight road to see what would happen if i were to launch it hard. I tried it and it felt pretty good, nothing unusual That doesnt mean it didnt happen tho. I may have just not heard it.

I did experiment. If i am in gear with the clutch in and let it out WITHOUT giving the car any gas there is no chirp. Only when gas is applied.

I read some old threads regarding TOBs and "chirping" but i thought they howled Thats what my old one did and i had it replaced and it went away.

I need some help please

Varies. Mine went out a 8000miles. Replaced it with another Ford bearing. It's already lasted longer than that.

should i replace the whole clutch or just the TOB? last time i had it done is when i first got the car so i figured i would just replace the whole thing. but now idk if thats necessary to do so or not.

I'd only replace the throw out bearing. But that's up to you, if you feel that the clutch needs replacement.

For the throw out bearing go with an OEM Ford piece or the Ford Racing one.

When I had my Mcleod clutch installed I replaced the TOB with an OEM. Lasted me oh, about a day before it started to chirp . Been dealing with it for a year or so now. . I think the screwed it up though when they were installing it.

How many miles are on your car? I'm pretty sure you can pick up a OEM clutch pretty cheap. Might not hurt to have them do that while there changing the TOB. They will have all that apart anyhow.

Yep. Tranny work is expensive. That's why I haven't got mine fixed yet. You shouldn't need a new clutch then with only 18k miles on it, but, to have them just replace the TOB is gonna be a pretty penny.

i plan on doing it myself, i just found my ford manual that walks me through it

too bad i dont have the money for LT headers


ill def try to do this over my winter break and if i do decide to do it myself ill def make a write up on how to do this **** cuz ive yet to come across one. not even on bullittarchive

as i was driving to class just now i was hearing the "chirping" noise well after my foot was let off the clutch. It was happening as i was going over bumps in the road. it still makes the noise under the previous conditions too. could it be a motor mount? or is that impossible?

is there an easy way for me to check?

this is probably not it, but if you hit hard underneath and hear a noise afterwards in the engine bay, you might want to check your header gaskets. the same thing happened to me and the noise that i heard was my gaskets. it eventually blew out.

Your explanation is slightly confusing but I'll throw this out there ... If your TOB is going, it will have a constant chirping sound when the clutch is engaged (foot off the clutch and in neutral). As it gets 'worse', there's an easy way to listen for it. Roll the windows up, air off, radio off while sitting still and push the clutch in. It will make a noise that (best way I can describe) a grinding noise combined with a slight stereo feedback type sound and it will stop when you let your foot off the clutch. Then the chirping will return. The weird thing is that it will not chirp all the time, only when your Ford car decides to chirp. I have no idea why but mine has been chirping/grinding off and on for about 6 months but I'm not in the mood to pull the trans.

Try to explain if it sounds like its coming from the front, back, middle, suspension, transmission, rear end, etc. Then there is what I like to call the 'I take good care of my car and think something is wrong' effect. This is when you do something that you wouldn't ordinarily do and as a result you think you hear something. This in turn makes you listen so hard for it that it bothers you and becomes something worse than it really is. Not saying that's the case (has happened to me a few times) but just a FWIW.

noise happened after bottoming car?noise present when car moves from stop with some throttle applied? noise present when going over bumps?--sounds like something may be rubbing something.lok at exhaust clearances, cables etc. anything rubbing on car/frame

the sound seems like it is coming from the passenger side. however the transmission is also to my left so it might as well be there too. ill have a passenger in my car when the weather is a little nicer to see where they think its coming from

sorry for the confusing description haha i tried to be as thorough as possible

-Clutch slipped (or i think it did[see description for more details])
-Car "chirps" when in the process or letting the clutch out and giving it gas. It doesnt "chirp" or make any weird noises when the clutch pedal is pushed down. It also does NOT make the chirping noise when you simply release the clutch and not give it gas.
-The same "chirp" can be heard when going over bumps

Check your trans mounts and engine mounts. I guess it could be clutch related but it's not typical that you would hear the same sound when going over bumps ...
