Non-destructive way to mount front plate?

  • Sponsors (?)

I've been driving around CA for 10+ years with two vehicles without front plates. 1 of every 3-4 cars here in SoCal doesn't have one. What I say you do is:
Stick the front plate on with double-sided tape just long enough to get the fix-it ticket signed off, then take it off again and wait 10 years until you get another ticket.
Dumb-a$$ law.

Looks pretty good. My stupid a$$ dealer had already drilled the front fascia. Now I am stuck with either living with it, paying a bodyshop god knows how much to fix it, or spending about $350 to get a take off part and pray it isn't too ding up.

+1 on the dumb-a$$ law.

My buddy says fight it.
It is an equipment violation, which, when rectified is signed off. Much like front tinted windows, etc.
You should have to do no more than get a cop to sign a document that shows you fixed it and mail that in (keep a copy for yourself). No fee, no fine. Anything else is illegal, since you can just say you lost the front plate or it fell off.
I smell skunk...

I've always wondered if there could be a way to slide some SERIOUS magnets up under the other side of the bumper... then mount 2 more on the plate and you'd be good to go. You could even cover them with something soft... but they'd have to be very very strong.

Well, like I was saying, just keep the plate in your trunk with some zip ties.
If a cop tells you he is going to write you up for a ticket, just whip it out, say "this fell off this morning!" and zip-tie it to the underside of the bumper or anywhere. He legally HAS to let you go right there and then.
Then, when you get home (or around the corner), snip-snip...

Dealer did the exact same thing to me.. Except I specifically told them not to... They basically told me to f off... I wasn't going to walk on the car, since it's exactly what I wanted, and I had them bring it in from out of state. So I ordered one from www.newtakeoff.com for about 280 shipped. Well, the first one they sent me was screwed up and paint was chipped all over. So they sent me another one for free. So now I have two Grabber Orange front bumpers... One, only thing wrong with it is it's drilled for the front bumper... the second one, there is just some small paint chips.

Anywho. It's a good alternative. Bumper comes off really easy. I sure the hell wasn't going to drive around with huge holes in my front bumper!

I just have the plate on mine. I might go with the take off part. It sounds like they have good customer service from your experience. Now I just have to convinve my wife that I need to spend another $300 on the Mustang.

Here is what the ticket paper work I got says specifically in regards to the fine...

"...pursuant to penal code section 1214.1, citation is subject to $300 civil assessment. All court appearances are by appointment only.

Mechanical/Registration/Driver's License violation require proof of correction. Eligible mechanical violations will be dismissed upon showing proof of correction from an official law enforcement inspection station. All correctable violations require a $10 court administration fee...."

That merely means they CAN charge you $300. Usually they reserve that for repeat offenders with loud pipes or severely safety violating modifications.

You need a signature and $10.
