Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate some advice. I am trying to replace my C4 with an AOD. I do alot of highway miles and the motor just sounds stressed with the C4. I currently have a 67 FB with a Roller 302. I was thinking about an 80's Mustang tranny which I would like it to be a direct bolt on. I am sure someone has a tranny they can recommend would work.

Thanks again for the time and assistance,:flag:

I'm also looking for an AOD for my "ya might as well... project"

I was told last night by a transmission guru to look for a female hex (about an inch wide) cast into the top of the case. These are the ~88 to 92 AODs with the beefier internals.

I think he said 93 is when they went to the AODE.

There is the crucial info you want. 88-92 are the good ones. 93+ is AODE which need an extra computer moduel to run them (baumanator). Thanks Tim =-)

I bought a Performance Automatic AOD with 2500 stall and it runs great in my 66 coupe. I have 3.55 posi out back and I cruise around ~2100 rpm at 60 mph. Good trans so far (and I even chirp second on command:D ). Good Luck

I thought the stall speed had to be below the cruise RPM, no?

You know, I've never really put the two together. I don't have a tach at the moment so I'm guessing at the exact RPMs at 60. But when in overdrive the motor is purrring along (unlike the C4 I had in it previously with a similar stall converter). I'll have to ask my buddy about that ( i did not buy the T/C myself, it came with the AOD from the performance shop, I'm taking the mechanics word). I guess I really just need to put a nice tach in the car (looking at one of 6-gauge replacements) and see whats going on. My car runs great since the new AOD install. I'll get back when I have precise cruise RPM measurements. Interesting..... Thanks

Got one today for $250. It's from a 91 Gran Marquis. They didn't have any from 5.0Mustang, Cougars or Thunderbirds :(

And I'm not so sure of the Hex indent in the top of the case. All the ones I seen with that mark were out of 4.6 motor cars.

Well the $250 AOD i got from the junkyard was...well, junk. It wouldn't go into 3rd or OD.

I had a reputable transmission shop check it out and they said it was toast, but rebuildable. It didn't have the data tag, but also they were pretty sure it wasn't a '91 AOD.

They said it would be better to take it back to the salvage yard and try another. So I got one from a '89 Cougar this time and it has the data tag to verify that. And it does have the recessed hex casting mark in the case previously mentioned. I did another clean-up and paint and installed it.

I had to do the linkage swap so the shift lever was up instead of down and while I had it off I replaced the seals and modified the arm one inch longer to match the throw of the old C-4 shift lever. I got the new filter & gasket on and sealed the pan.

Tommorow I'll add the fluid, fire it up and check the TV pressure and give it a try. If this one has issues, I think I'll remove it and have the transmission shop rebuild it. They said $650-700 depending on what it needs.

Any pics of the "hex"? I have three AOD's sitting in the garage for various toys. I'd like to verify what they are. I know one is from an 89 Grand Marquis since I pulled the entire drivetrain and put the 5.0L in my Bronco II (another unfinished project:( )
