Estimating fuel injector, carburetor and fuel pump requirements



Fuel injector, carburetor jet sizing, and fuel pump requirements can be estimated by using the following rules of thumb as a starting point. For a naturally aspirated (NA) engine (carbureted) on gasoline most need a brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) for gasoline of 0.50 lb/(hp·h). On E85 the same NA engine would need a BSFC of about 0.65 lb/(hp·h).



Turbocharged engines typically need BSFC fueling of about 0.60 lb/(hp·h), a reasonable first guess for fueling required on E85 would be 0.77 lb/(hp·h).



For a simple conversion to replace gasoline with E85 take the current "flywheel horsepower" as a reference point. With E85, power should increase by about 5%, so the estimated E85 fueling would be:



(BHPgasoline x 1.05) x BSFCe85 = Estimated E85 fuel requirements.

If a person wanted to go to E85, what parts would have to be changed?

Fuel pump, fuel injectors, custom tune???????

Say you are shooting for 300 wheel hp
stock fuel pump is ok 36lbs injectors
You need to add 46% more fuel to your tune
I would also set base time to 15 BTDC

My issue is turbo cars use more fuel and I do not know how much fuel to add. I know BSFC will be higher but how much? The math for E85 is below

(14.7 / 9.7) * (Engine HP * BSFC) / (Number of Injectors * (Injector duty cycle*100))
 
The dyno shop I got to may be able to help. They have a 750+rwhp turbo Talon that they've tuned for E85, and they've tuned a few other E85 cars. I don't know how willing they would be to give out any information, but it's worth a shot.
