What type of muffler?

Hi

I'm from Australia and looking to get some decent mufflers imported with a heap more gear for my 66 GT fastback. I have noticed the following on ebay for $69.95and was after some opinions:

FLOWMASTER, 40 SERIES PERFORMANCE MUFFLER, SOLD INDIVIDUALLY, ALUMINIZED STEEL -- Original Powerful Flowmaster Sound With Noticeable Interior Resonance, 2.50" Offset Inlet And 2.50" Center Outlet

Is this a good sounding, well priced muffler or is there something better from Flowmaster or Magnaflow?

Cheers,

Gary

I have had Dynomax Super Turbo's, Ultra Flo's and Flowmaster 40's on my 65 K code and I love the Flowmasters, they just sound the best to my ears. I also have 40's on my 87 LX. Most aftermarket mufflers have their own unique sound and it is just a matter of what sounds best to you. $69.95 is a real good price for those mufflers, typically $90 to $100 each around here in most places.

I would say go with a MAC flowpath or Magnaflow Magnapacks. Either with long tubes and a X pipe would sound amazing!! Borla usually quiet compared to others. Flowmaster, well, sounds like everyother flowmaster mustang out there. Drone is bad in the 2300-2500 range. MAC can drone too, but it seemed a bit different. Magnaflow wont drone since it is a straight through muffler. In the end, it depends on if you want a deep sound, higher pitched sound.. or you want it to sound like poo. If thats the case, buy SLP loudmouth.

I love Flowmasters, and never had a problem with drone.

Honestly though- asking what mufflers people would recommend is one of those questions that is 98% based on personal taste, so I if I was you, go to Youtube and start listening to different cars to see what you like.

Most of the manufacturers have sound clips of their mufflers on their website. I have Flowmasters and love the sound. Nice low rumble until you put your foot in it, then sounds like a raped ape if you can imagine what that sounds like :)

First off, before you go buying a muffler, what size exhaust pipe are you going to use ? 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 ?

If you want better flow then get Magnaflows. They make basically the best performing muffler out there. I happen to think they also sound fantastic. A lot of people think that Flowmasters sound good. If you like that sound, then that is fine, go ahead and get those. Flowmasters just don't flow quite as well as Magnaflows do.

If you are building a bottom end motor then the Flows might be better as they will generate more back pressure. If the motor is built for top end then they will slow you down.

I just sold my Flowmaster Delta Flow 40's - everybody has a different opinion, but I never liked the Flowmaster sound. Not enough meaty rumble, too much drone. I got myself a pair of $15 Cherry Bomb glasspacks and like this sound much better. Magnaflows are also really nice sounding mufflers, they seem to have a softened glasspack crackle, but they are much more expensive.

Or if you want stupid loud, go dynomax race bullets. I have 3" ones with an xpipe now on my car. Sounds awesome, but for a daily driver, I think Id lose my hearing. LOL

I had those on my '68 in high school. They were pretty loud, but I like my vehicles a little on the loud side :) they had decent sound cuality IMHO. Like they guy above said, try youtube or something like ..:: ExhaustSoundClips.com - Hear It Before You Buy It! ::.. before you decide.

Well, they are dumped under the car, about mid way, so I'm sure that makes them a tad louder, also the high compression plays into it a tad. :p

Yeah, I had mine with a side exit just in front of the rear wheels. A little quieter but not much. If you squint, you may be able to see it in the purplish thing in my avatar.

The price is decent and Flows sound good......on the outside. Notice how the ad says "noticeable interior resonance?" They're not kidding. That resonance gets old really fast, especially when it starts making your head hurt.

Personally, I would opt for a straight-through from the well-known brands or for some good turbo mufflers. The turbos don't flow as well, but they're not too loud and they still sound good.
