Anybody on here attend the late night drags at Portland International Raceway? I've been thinking about dragging my 1998 Cobra out there to see if I can't embarrass myself. It would be my first time out and I would like to meet someone out there to maybe give me some pointers.

Don't worry about it - just show up and watch what's going on and have some fun. Main thing is make sure your car is empty of any junk that's rolling around in it. Make sure the battery is secure, and the + post is covered. Make sure you have a functioning coolant recovery tank. When it's your turn to run, drive around the water box and forget about a burnout. Maybe do a quick hop to clean off the wheels. Roll up slowly to the lights - 1st pair at the top of the tree is the prestage lights, then the second pair is the staged lights. Now your ready to run. If you roll too far the prestage lights may go out, and that's ok. Then the amber lights will count down. As soon as you see the third amber light, let 'er rip. I would suggest starting at idle and rolling hard into the throttle to try and avoid wheel spin.

You'll love it. I thought for a second you might have my old car, but your's still has the factory wheels and ride height. My Atlantic Blue Cobra was lowered 2" and had chrome Bullitt wheels on it when I traded it in 2 years ago. You might need a helmet, your car will get you into the 13's pretty easily, and anything faster than 14.0 they require a helmet. You can check the regs on the PIR website.
Have fun!

yeah, I've checked out their site, I thought I'd pack my helmet just in case i did crack into the 13's. I'd be pretty happy with some low 14's, being my first time out. Anyhow, I think I'll be heading out there this Saturday. If anybody from around here is there feel free to come say hello.

I wish I could come by and admire your car. Still miss mine... But, I'll be out of town. Hopefully you'll continue to attend and hone your times. I'm way overdue to find out what my GT 500 will do on the track, and plan to start spending more time there in a few weeks.

I'd like to try and get out there more regularly, I'd like to see what that GT 500 can do too.

Well, I went down there last night and ran a best of 14.117 @99.5 with a 2.234 60'. It was a blast. If I can figure out the launch I've got 13's. But, all in all I think I did alright for my first time out.

I'm not going to be able to get to the track until sometime after Labor Day. Between the usual summer plans, visiting relatives, and my anniversary, my weekends are booked solid through then. Hopefully the week or two after that, I'll be there in my Shelby.

Hey Allan! Not used to seeing you over here, just daily over on .Net!
I don't currently have anything planned in the way of shows/events. If something pops up on a weekend that I'm free, I'll take the Shelby. Mostly I'm just tapping my foot waiting for my King to get out of the body shop. You've been there, you know how it is. Right now I'm on the back burner, the guy got a few small jobs in that he's working on before he gets back to mine.
Next year, when the King is finished and show-ready, I plan to hit a lot more shows. I had planned to go up to Car d'Alene in June, but they changed their requirements. When we went two years ago, it was open to all cars up to 1979. They scaled it back to 1972 effective this year. I guess they had too many entrants!
Hopefully we'll manage to be in a show together in the not-too-distant future. We've only been talking about it for 4-5 years now...
