Pinging on SCT tunes

Yup, bad battery  .. I cant believe it. Happy its not the ecu.

Still iffy on using tuner, I may just sell it.. sucks, but I feel jinxed or something lol. Maybe will just hang onto it till I can get a dyno tune.

You guys think this was just bad luck having battery go out on first attempt to custom tune?

Or could something else be wrong possibly?

yeah dont worry about it... its just one hell of a coinsidence... think about it... when your tuning your car from start to finish your fan and fuel pump are constantly running so its possible it just gave the battery its final drain into the grave

Agreed. Batteries are strange beast. They cab go at any time. Summer months are hard on batteries. I see you have a 03 and that makes your battery 6yrs old if you haven't changed it out earlier. 6yrs is damn good life to get out of a battery. I wouldn't be afraid of the tuner. I've changed tunes a bunch of times and never had a problem. Pearl02.

I have been unpluging the fuel pump fuse, and the fan connection each time I tune.

My wife and I counted the amount of times the car was stopped and started yesterday before I put the tune on it and it was like 12 times from her going to work, lunch, gas station, home, store, I picked up kid from school, store stop again for slurpees etc.. and it was probably over 100* F yesterday, maybe that killed it.

I went and put in the tune from Ryan and everything went ok thankfully. There is still a tiny bit of pinging, much less than before and it didnt do it till it was all the way warm from me driving it hard seeing how the tune felt. There seemed to be less power gain over stock compared to the SCT tune that pinged more(makes sense). I may drive the AM tune and stock back to back one more time.

If I am at 20 mph in second gear and I step on it(like 3/4 to full throttle) it will ping. So back to stock tune again. Will call AM again and see what they have to say I guess.. wish I had the money for a dyno tune right now or maybe mail order from another company to try out.

if your pinging wouldnt you pull codes for running to lean? i'm not pinging at all (that i can tell) but i'm pulling codes from bank 1 and 2 for lean... anyway back on topic... no i dont think you should be afraid of the tuner just gotta get it right and at an extreme get a dyno'd tune for piece of mind...

i had the same prolbems with my 02 gt. i got the sct also from am and i first did the 93 tune and selected the defalut option. went for a test drive and the trans was shifting into 2nd at 3500 rpm(sounded sick but would act just like yours) after about an hr of drving i started to hear a clunk/ping sound coming from under the car it would frist be only when i would get on it them it would do it all the time so i retuned back to stock. after i got my gears i retune for 87 and the gears it still did that but after about 500miles it only does it very lightly also the car is a beast it chrips in every gear (probly more the gears then the tune) the only problem i got is that it shift really hard and its probly messing up my driveline. also when you tune and untune always no matter what take out the fan fuse and the fuel pump fues

Is the transmission down shifting when you go to full throttle at 20 mph in second gear? If not this is the problem.

I am putting it in "2" (its an auto).

Still shouldnt ping. No matter what the rpm/load/gear I dont think ..if the custom tune is correct.

I am having more trouble now...and this is on the stock tune to be clear.

I got the new battery and put it in no problems car was acting totally normal. Started and drove around several times without any issues. Wife has to go to school and takes car and even stops at 7-11 on her way, no problems. She gets out of class and goes out to start the car and it wont start. I went and jump started it and she drove home fine, car started up fine at home three times. I took it to get the alternator tested and it tested ok.

I dont know whats going on now.. after testing alt. I came home and started the car twice and everything seemed normal so it sems like the alt. is doing its job, and I just bought the battery this morning...

edit:

if I leave it in D and am at 20 mph it will downshift to 1st and go.. during the spilt second it takes before hitting 1st it will ping .. then hits first no pinging I can hear and goes through the gears fine.

Far as I understand things its the load on the engine(low rpm and tall gear) that is bringing out the ping.

Did you clean the inside contact areas on the battery clamps? The contact areas on the battery posts and the clamps should be shiny, to make sure you get good contact.
You might want to try a different gas station. After changing to a different supplier, it might take a while before you see any change.

I didnt clean the clamps, I will tonight. Going to try to start it once more before bedtime, it will have been sitting about 3 hours at that point. There is no sign of any corrosion.

Im getting 12.8v-13.01v with car off at the battery and 13.5v-13.7v at idle, system seems to be working correctly.

Car started up twice, no problems. I ran it with everything on a/c and lights and all in the grarage at idle and volts at the battery never dropped below 13.5.

I guess I will try again in the morning.. everything seems to be working ok.. Real hot out today, dunno if that would have a non chargin effect though..

Battery was totally dead though when I had to jump it earlier today at my wifes school. took awhile to charge. Was no reponse at all from key remote or dash when I first got there.

I hope whatever it is is gone!

Just wanted to update this thread, car drove fine(about 45 miles) and started up three times yesterday, and started for wife to go to work this morning. Seems to be running normal on stock tune. Going to check if it cleared p1000 or not tonight when she gets home.

I just talked to Ryan and he said he was going to be in contact with you again today. Feel free to shoot me a PM too if you need any help from me with this.

Thanks,

Nick

Awesome, thank you. Yes I just finished emailing him.

I would like to add here that AM and Ryan have been nothing but helpful each time I have contacted them. The past few days with the car issues have been a little stressful and I am thankful for all the help.
