Max power on stock PI heads?

I'm debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on some ported heads, or, if I should go with a set of blower cams. I can't do both..

I am going to run a forged short block, with a Novi 2000, and want to make around 600whp. Can I do this on stock heads, with a good set of cams, and intake manifold, with the Novi? I have never tried to squeeze big power out of stock heads before.

Who here has pushed the limits on the stock castings?

KB claims they can get 500 rwhp with a 2.1L blower at 14 psi on stock heads and cams. I imagine that 600 would be possible with about 18 psi of boost and cams.

I would imagine that you might benefit more from cams than the ported heads and the cams install would be much easier than the heads.

I see that you are running Patriot heads.. I can swing a set of their stage 2 heads, plus a set of good cams, but, I've heard good/bad about Patriot. I have a set of Comp springs, and some Comp retainers sitting here. I wonder if if it would be worth it to get a set of Patriot heads, and swap that stuff over?

The patriots aren't the best heads out there regarding flow, but there is nothing wrong with them and they flow much better than stock PIs.

They had a problem with leaking valve seals a while back, but I think they solved that issue. Great customer service too.

I would get the stage IIIs with a blower, though. I got my stage IIs back when I was N/A and thought I would never get a blower.

I just talked to a guy at Patriot, and I can get a set of stage 2 heads, bare, without guides, seats, or valvetrain for 965.00. I have a set of springs and retainers here, already, and I'll just need a set of valves, guides, and have them assembled with a good valve job. I think that's the ticket.. I want to make 600-650rwhp, and with that, plus a good set of cams, I should be able to. I plan on running Cushman's stage 2 blower cams (the old VT stage 2 blower cams).

You get what you pay for. Patriot for the longest had the biggest quality control problem. They may have worked on fixing that. But if you gathered a survey of all the popular heads and asked out of the group who had problems with their heads the majority will be Patriot heads. Just an FYI, is it worth the gamble in the longrun to save a few bucks in the shortime to hurry up and get the heads?

just to give you an idea look at my mods. many of them are what you are looking to do.

i have heads and cams with the novi2000 at 14psi. i make 506rwhp at 6000 rpm. however, i do have some tuning issues that are not allowing me to take my built engine to 6500rpm right now. i would estimate that at that rpm i would make 520rwhp.

i also have a miled stage 1 emissions friwndly street custom cam. i hope to me switching to a more aggressive cam this summer. i estimate the bigger cam bringing me up to hopefully about 550/560rwhp. it better or it wont even be woth the money or time and labor...i will let you know.

my goal is also 600rwhp. i think at that point a pulley drop to add 2 psi will give will give me another 20rwhp will put me in the 575rwhp range. i still have the stock intake so if i get an aftermarket that should put me real close to 600 not quite making 600 though.

i think i will be happy with 580rwhp though! lol
good luck, i will post any updates i might have. i dont think i will spend all that money for 80 hp. i actually hope the cams i choose will add more then i think so i dont have to do much else.

What cams are you going with? I'm interested in upgrading to some serious blower cams. Any suggestions?

I think above 14 PSI your going to run flow/efficiency problems. To get the most efficiency, you need to upgrade your heads and cam. A bigger cam will bump up your power levels, but the heads can only flow so much.

If you're going through the trouble and expense of installing a forged shortblock, why cut corners at the part of the engine that makes the power?
