I own a web marketing/development firm in Texas. I was at the local Ford dealership pitching an idea and I would love to get your thoughts on the concept that I pitched to the dealership.

Idea: Mustang owners (most of them) are a special breed. There is no car that offers more after market products than the Mustang. Why don't you offer to be the friendliest Mustang dealer around by offering aftermarket performance parts, like we see in all the magazines.

When I was shopping for a car it would have been nice to hear..."Mike, would you like to add a supercharger to your stock stang or perhaps choose from one of the many wheel offerrings or body kits. We can easily add this to your financing and also make sure that your parts are covered under the original Warranty period.

In other words wouldnt it be great if you walked into a dealership and it was their job to treat Mustang owners with a first class level of service and let them choose from any of the performance/cosmetic upgrades and it could wrapped into to your monthly payment.

I know I would have probably bought a few thousand dollars worth of upgrades up front rather than having to fork over the cash at a later date. I would like to know your thoughts before I start building the concept website.

Any comments would surely be appreciated.

Mike

1. I realize that warranty issues will affect some parts that aren't FRPP.
2. Thought about limiting parts to well known parts like shelby, steeda, Roush, Saleen.

Galpin Ford in California already has a customization shop and they do what you're suggesting.

I work at a Ford dealer in Washington and we do all kinds of aftermarket stuff (Mustangs and trucks are the big ones). We've done superchargers included in the vehicle's financing. We've done all kinds of Ford and FRPP stuff. My own personal 2007 Mustang GT had all of its mods done at our dealership (Vortech V2 supercharger, stall converter, 4.10 gears, BMR tunnel brace & driveshaft loops, upgraded brakes, x-pipe, etc.).

There are dealers willing to do aftermarket work on new cars, you just have to search far and wide for them. Problem for the dealer is stocking the right parts. It's actually easier to wait for a customer to say what they want, order it, and install it later. Keeps overhead way down that way.

Mike,

This is a great idea. BTW, where in Texas?

The problem is, in big city dealerships anyway, is there is too much going on to focus on one make and model. And, the parts departments like to mark everything up 300% or choose not to sell the parts at all. If you can make it happen, more power to you!

On a side note, I orderd some parts for a Chrysler 300 online from a dealership owned by Rick Hendrick (yes, the NASCAR team owner) and the parts were MUCH cheaper than at any of the local dealerships. They focus on 300 mods, kind of like what you are proposing for Mustangs. It can work.

I thought the Ford dealerships already did that...

You can buy a Mustang and load it up with FRPP before you take delivery and retail all the warranty...
Its just that the sales person is clueless and doesn't know its even possible. You have to coordinate with the sales, service, and parts manager to make it happen. And they will all through it in the financing with approved credit...
