Dim Light on Autometer gauges?

I was considering upgrading my stock gages in the '92 to the Auto Meter Ultra-Lite series. I also thought they would be a nice addition to my '65 project. Before doing the full upgrade, I decided to buy just the clock to see if I liked the look of the Ultra-Lite series. (The clock on my after market radio is so small it's really not usable anyway, especially in daylight.)

I mounted the clock temporarly in a blank below the radio, and it looks really great – in the daylight. At night, though, the light is so dim that it's barely readable. At first, I put a blue color boot over the bulb so it would match the radio blue lighting, but then it wasn't readable at all. :notnice:

Just wondering if all the Auto Meter Ultra-Lite series gauges are this dim. If so, I'm going to look for something else. I do far too much night driving not to have a well-lit set of gauges.

So, does anyone have any experience with these gauges or other thoughts?

Auto Meter site says an LED bulb can't be used with the clock . . . may try it anyway, though.
I dont see why not. the autometer brand LED may not fit, but fab one up that will and you will be golden. FWIW I have autometer phantoms and with the supplied bulb they were dim and washed out at night. my kids little night light was brighter.
