Hi all,

I drove a rental car recently that had factory Sirrius/XM radio and it spoiled me..now I have to have it :D

I have an aftermarket stereo that is Sirrius/XM ready, I just need to mount an antenna somewhere. I'm not going to cut a whole in the roof to run the cable. I came up with the idea of removing the stock radio antenna and mounting the sattelite antenna there with adhesive tape in the same spot and running the cable where the radio antenna cable goes now. Sure I would lose the radio, but I don't care since I would have the sattelite.

Has anyone done this? If so, how does it look and work?

If no one has done it, does anyone know if it would actually function in this spot, or does it have to be on the roof?

Thanks!

Mine is in the middle of the trunk lid. I also have a NAV antenna in the center of the dash up against the glass inside the car. It seems to work fine. You might want to try it there as an experiment before making any mods to the exterior.

Before figuring out how to 'gut' the factory Sirius antenna, I had my XM antenna under the windshield, on the dash.

That lasted a few years until I dissected the Sirius trunk antenna.

I don't have pictures at the moment but I took a small XM antenna and hid it inside the Sirius 'bubble'.. works great! Plus, I get XM radio quality, instead of the tinny Sirius quality.

I switched to XM too as part of my Avic F90BT install. I just swapped the connector on the end of the factory Sirius antenna and connected it to the XM receiver. Works great!

You can mount it under the rear deck. It will be hidden but work fine. I did this on a 2007 with factory satellite antenna on the trunk. I added an aftermarket and the factory antenna wouldn't work. The antenna under the deck was not visible and worked fine.

You mean behind the back seat inside the car underneath the felty carpet stuff? Why I'm asking is because I have a 2010 that someone was kind enough to rear end while I was stopped at a R/R crossing...I figure as long as the entire back end is being repaired I might as well do some improvements like removing the "trunk turd" (Sirius antenna) from the trunk lid and relocating it somewhere else.

I think we are talking about the same place. It was inside the car where there now is a carpet type cover. It is behind the rear seats and under the panel that joins the glass. You could see it from inside the trunk but not with the trunk closed.

I didn't want mine on anywhere on the Paint on my 06 so I had the shop place it here:

It is right under the windshield. There was no clearance issues with the wipers and the reception was great.

@stanmckinney: Sorry to bug you for info again....but are you saying it's hidden under the carpet type cover and it gets OK reception through the carpet and glass?? ....Or are you saying it's actually under sheet metal (didn't think that would work)?

-Just trying to figure it out and make sure that I can get this setup to work! I have a non-satellite trunk lid on order. Does anyone know if you can reposition it with the stock wiring or will I have to lengthen the antenna wires? I plan on using (remounting) the stock antenna.

Great, thanks for all of the info! I like the idea of mounting it under the rear deck. I'm going to pick up an antenna and try a couple of these spots out and see what works best for me.

I was finally able to tackle the antenna install this weekend. I wound up putting it were stanmckinney suggested: under the package tray right on the metal. It works perfect! I wound up putting the nav there as well and it works perfectly fine.

I routed my wiring through the console and under the carpet, then under the backseat and up next to the rear subs to the underside of the package tray. I had to take the top of the console off of course and I also removed the 2 bolts at the front and the 2 nuts under the little carpet/felt piece in the console storage area to be able to lift the console bottom up enough to get the antenna wires to go under the carpet. I removed the rear seat (2 clips on either side and then just lift up and out) and put the wire under the carpet from there. Folded down the rear seat back and pulled the wires up and past where the factory wires come up and out for the subs. Works perfect that way if anyone decides to try it. Just make sure you put the wires under reat seat where they won't get pinched.

Thanks everyone for the help!
