1997 Mustang GT. I got my rear end done at a local shop who was sorta a family of a friend. I ended up paying $2050 for the below mentioned work.
Symptoms before work: LOUD humming noise coming from the back.
Work done: 2x rear tires, spider gears, 2x rear axle shafts, 2x axle shaft bearings, ring and pinions, traction lok rebuilt. The new gears are 3.73
After Work: Once I got the car back I realized the car was a bit "peppier". I drove it with a light for a couple days to allow ample time for meshing (spelling) and then went back to normal driving. The first day I got the car back I noticed a WHINING sound coming from the rear. It starts at about 25mph and goes all the way to about 40mph. The sound is only apparent when pressing on the gas pedal SLIGHTLY. I did some research on the net and went to another mechanic and both sources tell me that its from the ring and pinion set up. I went back to the shop where I had gotten the work done and he told me he used a new shem (spelling) on the pinion and he told me he used a FRPP ring and pinion (BS). They told me to drive it for a week and allow a break in period to see if the noise goes away. Additionally, this morning when I was ROLLING out of my driveway I heard 3 LOUD consecutive knocks coming from the rear.
What should I do? Is the whinning noise from a bed set up of the ring and pinion? What the heck could cause those loud knockings? I spent over 2 grand of my school loans to get this job done and the rear end still does not seem reliable or safe to me. I was told i was getting a two year warranty on everything and once i got the receipt there was nothing about a warranty. The guy who did the job told me he was not EAS certified and I was charged 90 dollars an hour. Any advice would be really really helpful. Thanks.
