after a year of down time (harness "fire"), i finally got the car back on the road last month, and now its back off. it died on the road last week (to be honest, i was having a bit of fun with it, probably the root cause of this problem), and now to spread my embarrassment around some, i present you with carnage:
this was the first thing i discovered:
note the intake valve, and the exhaust has been hit a bit too. still havent checked pushrods yet, but im guessing theyre bent too, especially after finding this (and theres at least one more like this):
last cam lobe (#8 intake for those trying to figure it out in their heads) is pretty scored up too:
in fact, the whole cam (tfs stage 1 btw) doesnt look so hot:
when i pulled the front cover, the cam bolt was lose, as was the dowel and the sprocket, and therefore the chain (which may have skipped a tooth too, but i didnt see any damaged teeth) was loose too. pull the cam plate, and there were shavings on the backside of it, and im kinda wondering what the rest of the bearings look like after seeing the first one:
i know its a bit hard to see, but the bottom of it is wiped pretty good, top and sides look hardly worn, pretty much new (only about 2k on the rebuild)
and heres the piston damage:
doesnt look too deep, so im thinking i can re-use them, but the cam and bearings look trashed, need at least two new lifters (although i still have my o.e. ones if i can use them), and the heads need a valve job, as well as possibly/probably new pushrods. bottom end looks ok though, but ill probably pull the rotating assembly out and check the bearings out later.
btw, when i put it together, i DID check ptv clearance, and it looked ok. im not sure whether what im seeing here is symptom or cause, so........??????
