Two months after clutch job squeaking from below that go away when clutch is pressed?

Throw Out Bearing

I'm betting you didn't use an OEM bearing but one from whatever manufacturer you got the clutch from?

If so... go to dealer and buy an OEM bearing. Rip it all apart and replace it.

Anything is possible but it's unlikely the pilot bearing. I've seen some pretty shredded pilot bearings (bushings) that didn't make a peep.

Mustangs are notorious for eating throwout bearings. Even with the clutch engaged, the pilot bearing is pressed against the clutch and is constantly spinning.

Is it, "OMG I gotta tear it apart today and fix it"? No. I'd get it replaced in a reasonable amount of time though... Depending on the severity, it can score up the fingers on the clutch plate if left unattended.

First find out if the pilot bearing is a solid ring or actual has needle bearings, there is a way to adjust your clutch cable to take up some slack but you risk grenading your throw-out bearing early. My after market TOB squeals from time to time, so did my OEM, the design is very flawed. I'm thinking every TOB will eventually squeal.

If you turn up the volume in the second video you can hear the squeak come and go by just resting my foot on the clutch.

What does replacing the throw out bearing cost? Almost as much as the full clutch job?

Depends how much your mechanic thanks his time is worth, I'm thinking 75 bucks an hour max, not including the cost of the clutch kit and resurfacing the flywheel. Dropping the cars transmission is not as big of deal as most might think, but your mechanic needs to be aware of alighnment issues w/the cars transmissions.
Definantly your Throwout bearing if the squeal goes away w/resting your foot on the clutch pedal.

Your local mechanic should have known better and changed the TOB with the clutch. That sounds horrible compared to ones I have heard going bad.

If it were me I would call him and ask if he changed it. If not, I would be pissed at him and demand he does it for free (free labor) or at a lower cost. I would be shocked that a shop would still be in business cutting corners like this.

Unfortunately it was the previous owner who had it done, and was maybe more like 3-4 months ago I guess. He said the guy changed the throw out bearing though. But who knows. Only started making this noise recently.

So adjusting the clutch might clear this up a bit or no?

It looks and sounds like the typical throw out bearing noise. It is more of an annoyance than something that will hurt anything. As long as the noise quits when you press the clutch pedal it means the bearing will still rotate freely under pressure. The little squeaking noise with light application won't hurt a thing. The whole problem is the new design clutches that rest the bearing on the pressure plate all the time. In the old days clutches had a return spring and an adjustment so the TOB didn't touch the PP until you depressed the pedal.

My original TOB made the noise and I actually had some success with spraying some lube on it through the fork hole. As long as you keep away from the pressure plate fingers there is little likelihood of getting lube on the clutch itself.

When I replaced my clutch I put a light duty coil spring over the cable to help hold it off the PP a little. It took a short spell of squeaking a year later then quit.

Also I thought that if it squeals when your ARE NOT pushing on the clutch it is actually the Pilot Bearing and if it squeals when you ARE pushing on the clutch it is the Throw Out Bearing, no?

Other way around normally. When you push down the clutch, you push the TOB against the pressure plate, and it will stop making noise. When you let off the clutch, it will spin freely and make noise.

Billy....

Bite the damned bullet man. Get your tools out and rip that thing apart and replace the TOB yourself. If you don't know how, I can pretty much guarantee you that you will when you're done. :)

Hopefully you got a few buddies lying around that would love a fun filled afternoon of Mechanic stuff, pizza, beer, and watching your GF come around time to time in a bikini top and shorts, to see how you're doing. :nice:

It's how things are done.

Had the same problem with my 00GT. My factory clutch adjuster was bad and it ended up tearing up my T.O.B. I had to tear it all back apart to replace the throw out myself. Do you get any vibration thru it?
