squealing noise?

My '97 does it too. I figured it was the throwout bearing. Thanks for confirming that. The real question is, what are the risks of driving it that way until it is time to replace the clutch? Is it going to grenade and kill anyone in the passenger compartment?

Riding a chirping bearing isn't the worse thing that can be done in the car world, but it isn't something to be abused. Keep in mind that the purpose of the bearing is to disengage the clutch when the pedal is depressed, so although there is no grenading or shrapnel to be had in the passenger compartment, bank on spending some time on the side of the road and some money on a tow truck.
