Oh Mr Demille! I'm reday for my close up!

So I'm awake at 3:00 AM. Brain will not go to sleep. I got several hours still left on the painters race car, and mine is supposed to be at the house at 9:00.

I want that thing gone and I want to get started on mine. So I lay awake until a "sensible" time, 5:45.
I get up and started on finishing his ratty SBC motored hatch.

By 11, the painter calls and says he's on his way. I am just tying up loose ends when he gets here.

He off loads the thing and I give it a look. Far from perfect by any stretch. There is a bunch of
Stuff in the paint but the Painter assures me that that will all wet sand out, and that at the level I want the paint job to be it was gonna have to be color sanded and blocked anyway. ( I planned to do it regardless)

So I guess you want to see pictures?

It's not ready yet.

I will let you see the front end, I dont really intend to buff in all of the contours around the headlights and grille, so I started putting that stuff together after the painter left at 1:00.

Don't dog my tri bars I'll keeeel you.

There's a black trim ring that goes around the headlight, that I haven't put on yet ( gotta aim the headlights still)

Remember, you can click on the pic, and make it "great big"

The hood scoop is definitely way better shorter. notice my Cobrajet emblem.......ain't it cool?

All this time, I was thinking that I was putting a 68 front end on it, but now that its in color, Damned if it don't look closer to an 05 than it does to a 68.

I, like others have been pondering a catchy plate for it, but couldn't land on anything. I was thinking that it should be something revolving around the fact that it is two different year cars. So I'm thinking "BLENDED"; "MERGED"; "ALTERED" " MUTANT".........Naaaah! None of those are for me.

But, as epiphanies go,...I'm eating breakfast, and I think maybe I'll go w/a plate that revolves around the Mach 1 theme.....I mean, what is "Mach 1" any how?

BAM! ( it hit me so hard I got a nose bleed)

Everybody who knows anything, knows that Mach 1 is the..... "SPDFSND"

Tomorrow, You get to see that tail.

No, sorry. I decided to wet sand and buff the car, as opposed to putting anymore of it together. I started to finish the tail, and put the stripe on and post those up but,....

The stripe comes cut in 3 pieces trimmed to fit a 69 mach 1 trunk. Despite the fact that my overall rear width is WAAYY narrower than a 69, my trunk itself is waaay wider.(than a 69)

What I'm left with is a decal that has to be cut and seamed together in 3 sections just across the trunk, with two additional pieces on each of the quarters. (needless to say, it's a royal pain in the ass) and I messed attempt #1 up all to hell. I had to peel the main 3 sections back off due to a misalignment, and that means I gotta start over on that.

So, I'll order another "trunk only" section of the whole stripe kit, and try it again when it gets here later this week.

The rear of the car is gonna be a challenge regardless. Not only with the stripe, but the exhaust tips now have to fit through those holes in the freshly painted lower valance. I forgot to adjust one of them before I sent the car away for paint. (just too much crap to remember)and that is a bunch of scratched and chipped paint just waiting to happen. I have to drill 14 little holes perfectly across the trunk lid that the pins that make up the 7 little chrome letters in "mustang" go in.

I guess I'll attempt all of that stuff today, instead of more buffing. If I do, and can get all of the damn sticky adhesive off left over from the stripe, then I'll try to post a few of those w/o the rest of the stripe installed.

Well here it is, the Tail.

I've spent two days putting it back together. The Chinese tail lights rearing their ugly head, as they fought me every inch of the way. I rewired the fox multi-light harness to accommodate the single bulbs now on each side. They fit really bad, I had to dick with them for about 30-40 minutes before I could even put a nut on them to tighten them down.

I looked all over the place for a stupid pigtail for the tail lights, but they are not available, not even made anymore. You can buy an entire rear harness for a 68 mustang, you just can't buy a 3.99 pigtail.

So like everything else on this car, I used a generic one, and made it fit.

The pics are showing the missing center section of the mach 1 stripe that I messed up Sunday. I'm still kind of up in the air about the 69 stripe altogether, and think I may use a 70 mach 1 stripe instead. The fact that I have to splice the stripe into 3 sections just across the trunk is the reason for my hesitation.

I contacted the company that made the stripe, and asked if they would just not cut the stripe, and let me do it, and they can't. (Something about licensed Ford product, keeping it as it was supplied from Ford)

Yeah right, like Ford cares about me running a non-original stripe on my spliced together car.

The 70 stripe just runs across the spoiler, ( and doesn't turn down on each side). If I can get one made here locally in the same reflective gold that the side stripes will be, and if they'll make it in one piece, then I'll probably send the new 69 rear stripe back.

My good, Fat tires aren't on it. I have to buff the car still and I'm not going to clean up those as well. So It's still not complete back there.

The drivers' side and roof are all wet sanded and ready for buffing. I'll do that tomorrow and we'll see what I've got after that.

Mike, the black and red look really, really good together. Taillight panel with the filler cap is spot on. Very impressive!

I see the buffer! Nice tool, perfect size... but I must point out.... BAD MIKEY! Never leave your buffing bonnet on the floor!

Looking great, man! This thing is really going to be awesome when you're done. I know you're struggling with it right now, but little details like that trunk stripe is the icing on the cake for this car.

I spose you're gonna make me go sit in a corner now?:rlaugh:

Yeah, I know potential to get some kind of crap on the pad and cut the paint. The green pad needs rinsing anyway, I just moved it off the stool I had it on to take the pics.

I promise to never do it again.:D

Thanks again. The stripe is so integral to the car I simply cannot "not" put it on. (the sides really look "blank" w/o the stripe)

I like things plain but, I think the stripes are going to look really good if you keep the sides & spoiler stripes. Just the spoiler stripe by its self probably wouldn't look as good. The car is looking bad a** though Mike. keep up the good work & pics.
