Hey guys I'm fixing to convert my black/grey interior to all black to give it a black on black effect. I was wondering whats the best paint to use? I've done a little bit of research and it seems that everyone is liking the SEM prodects. Whats your thought on them? are they esaily chipped or scratched? also I've been looking but really havent fount a good method on doing this.....From what I've read prep is everything so I guess i'll get the SEM plastic prep from LMR, would simple green work well on cleaning this also? and about how many cans would you recommend me getting of vinyl and lacquer and the prep cleaner? I plan on doing door panels and everything......Thanks.

I have personally never used simple green. When painting my hard plastics, a good scrub with soap and water has always worked well for me, as well has the plastic prep. Sometimes, depending on how far I want to take it, I'll grab some sand paper and hit it a few times to clean up the surface. Ill wipe it clean and then wash it and dry it one more time.

The number of cans will just depend on how you use each can. Some people might use 4 cans, and some might use 8.

I always use Simple Green or Dawn type degreasing dish liquid with great results. Prep-sol or other solvents will melt factory paint on dash. I use a maroon scotchbrite with the soapy water or Simple Green to scuff it for adhesion. Adhesion promoter can be had at Auto Zone in a rattle can. LET IT DRY WELL IN BETWEEN COATS. Like 15 min.

Check out the first page of my build thread, starting at post #7 . I explained in great detail how I painted my interior plastics and it worked excellent.

I love your build thread!! Very nice and very very helpful! Thanks for this. Was it pretty easy to take it all out? I've got the black/grey interior and wanna go all balck for that black on black effect since my cars painted black. How hard was the carpet to install? I'll have to change mine since its grey and will eventually change seats...I love your hatch area it looks great....What I got was one can of lacquer and one can of vinyl paint from LMR and one can of there prep, so I'll more than likely need more cans especially since its grey that I'm painting over. Are there any recomendations or tips on some things i should change or check up on while I have alot of the interior out? Thanks for your help I'm excited to get this started lol

The interior was pretty easy to take out. As you take stuff out, it's a good idea to put the screws/bolts in Ziploc baggies and label it (console, RH door, RH scuff plate, etc.). It seems tedious, but when you go to put it all back together there's very little guessing about which screws go where. That being said, nearly all of the screws are #8-32 and are varying lengths (3/4", 1", 1-1/2" and a couple are 2" maybe).

The carpet was actually pretty easy once you get everything out. The hardest part was just wrestling with it since it's heavy with the jute padding on the back.

The hatch area is something a good buddy of mine and I have been doing for years. It's a simple (and cost effective) way to freshen and clean up the hatch area and provide a more stable surface.

I think I went through 2 or 3 cans of paint, and I have about 1/4 can leftover. Going from grey to black shouldn't be too bad, but you'll need more than 1 can I suspect. If you want to find the paint locally check and see if you have a Sherwin Williams automotive paint store in your area. They carry the SEM line as well.

I've painted a bunch of interiors. I just wiped the plastics down with Acetone. Do NOT use laquer thinner it will melt the texture. Acetone will clean the plastic of grease/armoral/wax but will not melt the texture bumps.

I've used Duplicolor and SEM black. I don't really have a preference, both products worked well. It's all in the prep but secondly....light and even coats. Don't try and cover your arm rests or your quarter trims in one coat. Just spray lightly....3 4 5 coats...just keep spraying until it's covered.
