True Factory Gt

1966 Mustang Convertible did any True Factory GT's come off the production line without the rear seat reinforcement? I have all the other options, e.g., Orig Fog Lgt wiring and switch, punched holes through radiator support. Frame rails orig/with reinforcement inside, disk brakes, exhaust trim and trumpets etc. All but rear seat? Any thoughts...?

Hi there, I experienced a similar dilemma last year when I bought a GT 66 Coupe. It had all the GT items except the fog light holes punched through the radiator support panel. I ignored this on the basis I'm sure the car must have had a front end accident at some point in its life and the panel was replaced with a standard one.

I reckon lots of ppl can clone standard mustangs to look like GT"s but there"s just a few things you can't do! The hardest being the reinforcement plates under the rear seat & the support in the rear rails to hang the rear exhaust. Not impossible but very hard! Check the web, lots of info there to determine if a mustang is genuine GT! Check the steering box number matches the Gt specs? I think it's AX ????

Good luck

Thanks for what you have added with your 66 Coupe. Appreciate the knowledge and comments. I would think too maybe that support panel was replaced!
I will add the following: I have done some research...to include mine being an A Code, this one actually has pony interior, which was an extra option not required to be a GT. Plus I do have the tight steering box HCC-AX roughly 3.5 turns to the stops does not appear to be replaced, but probably rebuilt. Over sized sway bar in the front. Built in Detroit delved to Tx. Concave under instrument bezel...it has all that I have read about however, missing reinforcement rear seats! Sooooo all but one - of the True GT options. Hummmm

all the gts i have ever owned had the floor reinforcements never seen one without.
look closly and see if the rear floor has been replaced. the fraim rail reinforcement
was only on the gts and not the normal a code that i have ever seen, are you sure you are not looking at the tie down plate holes? there should be two sets of holes on the gt rails, exhaust and tie down .also check the rear brake line mount at the floor pan it is mounted in a different place than the regular brake line. could be a dealer gt

Ok, aware of the quarters... possible weld - will get in there and check. Joining Mustang club and hope to see a Factory GT and I will compare those frame rail two sets of holes...I believe it's correct. Also, bought this car knowing all that I have verified...previous owner feels it's factory - but never solved the mistery. Thought of Marti report, but does not go back to 1966. Floor pans look original, or someone did a great job of replacing!? Oh well...thank again!

Here is a pic of what a true GT exhaust support plate & hangers look like!

The only other possibility is as the previous post mentioned, it may be a dealer GT ? I too have NEVER seen a genuine 66 GT without the support plate & hangers!

My 65' GT vert has the supports so there is nothing to preclude Ford from not installing them on that body style. I've checked them against a 66' GT coupe and they were the same dimensions.
fast back ,coupe and convert all have the same plate.same with 67-69 the exhaust haingers are angled on them compaired to the 65-66 though. for some reason 70s do not have the plates in the floor not even the cobra jets

Thank you for the picture - yes, I considered dealer GT, however this car does have the extra metal in the rear frame, brake line off set and as mentioned early it does have all of the other true GT options. My last check will be to look inside on the rear quarter to see if any holes were welded closed!? I'm also writing to the state of OK to see if they will provide me the names of previous owners...long shot!

Hi, I wanted to follow-up with my original question about being a true GT. I did find holes filled in on the rocker panels, so this tells me the car originally had rocker panel molding. Which leads me to the following two questions:

1. When a dealer added GT Options - did they remove all of the standard Mustang body trim, fill holes and paint as required - to add all GT options? I can't imagine them getting into body work and painting?

2. Please tell me...in 1966 did the Rally Pac come in colors to match the interior or were most black?

yes a dealer would fill the holes and touch up paint the spots. when it left the dealer it looked as a GT.
all the ralley pacs i have seen were black. i have painted them to match. i had two 66 true GTs,a coupe and a matching fast back factory black with red poney interior the origional rally pacs were black .i painted them red to match the interior.

By 66 most of the weird stuff about the GTs were worked out. I have a very early 3/26 build 65. The GT wasn't released to the public until 4/16/65 It has the fog light switch located in the D shaped hole that all Mustangs have on the bottom of the dash frame to the left. This was normal switch location on the first couple months of production. The amp gauge was unique to the 65 Gt or pony interior also. My car is a non pony interior so the dash wiring was only for the GT with five gage panel. 66 had a dfferent gauge with two wire hook up. the strange thing on my car was the dash opening does not have the round dash relief for the speedometer. it was modified to fit with what looks like a special tool. it was bent to fit with a manual punch and die. looks very uniform, but not corect for a GT. I asked a lot of question on this and found out that it was not uncommon with specials coming down the line. Especially at the start of a new option like the GT. by the time someone noticed that they had welded in the wrong dash it was to late to change, so ford had some special tools to modify the car. no computers back then, just people who made mistakes. The reason for the long story is that these cars were hand made and they did things on the line that were not correct but they had to keep up with the overwhelming demand. So just because its missing one componet it still may be a true GT. I have read that in the Ford production numbers they count dealer GTs as factory cars.

On a convert you can look down the inside where the top drops into and see if the holes for the side scoop chrome were welded. Also in the trunk, you remove the rubber plugs on top of the frame rails and stick you finger in the hole, feeling for the frame crush reinforcements where the exhaust hangers go. Do not mistake the crush reinforcements for the tie down plates for the exhaust ones. If the trunk floor or rear frame rails are still original, then this is the best test for factory vs dealer. These holes and crush plates could not be added with out major surgery. The holes are impossible to drill in the frame rail with the car assembled.
