Hey everyone, new to stangnet, but not to stangs.
I have a 96 cobra vert with just over 84k miles and just recently stereo has to cranked all the way up just to hear it. I have sound coming out of all the speakers, but not sure whats going on here. Could the head unit be going bad, the CD player quit last summer, and the tape deck hasn't worked for a couple years now, not that i used it anyways. Im planning on getting a new head unit, but I would like to retain the factory amps for now. Could the amps be bad, or do you think its the head unit.

I have researched this high and low, and I haven't found any posts about sound volume problems, and it appears if the amps go bad, you loose sound all together.
any opinions would be great, thanks.

The close to 20 year old factory head unit? Yes I think it is probably a safe bet to say it is going bad. But I wouldn't be surprised if there were multiple other issues too...they weren't super sound systems to start with.

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure the head unit is going bad, i just thought it was weird about the volume, the system was fine for me and always sounded decent compared to what i was used to.

I'm going to install a new aftermarket head unit, I have seen the threads on bypassing the amps and installing new speakers and such, is that worth it?
I'm leaning towards buying the adapter from crutch field and trying that first, and if it still sounds like crap going for the complete over hall new speakers amps etc.

I went with just the head unit and the adaptor a few years ago (I have an older JVC head unit now)...but now the rest of the system is flaking out so I'll be replacing the amps and speakers at some point.

Yea I need to do the same thing too. I have an aftermarket multimedia HU with a amp and small sub in the trunk but still using everything else 460. I have replaced the back 460 amps twice.
