    I agree with the above to a degree. The brands tend to design all of their stuff to work well together, however a custom cam IMO is really the best way to go.

    Timing chains

    Gear drives are noisy and kind of a red neck thing imo. I think an adjustable ford racing timing gear and chain set is like $45 from summit racing, I cant remember though.

    Combination of driveability issues. Doesn't make sense..

    The bucking could be caused by the lope of the cam while cruising in too high of a gear. Every manual transmission car with a lopey cam I have ever driven has done that.

    water pump gasket: paper with or without permatex?

    If its a pain in the ass use a sealer, if its not too bad then just leave it dry. Thats my line of thinking when Im working on cars at work.

    Thermal wrap effectiveness?

    I had the same problem. I cured it by getting a smaller more powerful starter from pa performance and putting a 2 gauge starter wire on it.

    The 4.2 is a debored 5.0, so everything on the outside is basically the same. You can drop in a 5.0 without any issue.
