i searched and i just gave up after 25mins of reading information in posts that i couldnt understand. so in the last 3 weeks i have put 1100 mi on my 06 gt. and i was remembering everyone on here saying they were going to change their oil at 1500 and 3000 and 5000 but each time they mentioned a different type of oil, like from a normal oil to a 50% synthetic to a full synthetic. and i was wondering what i should do. because i know 0 about oil and was just wondering what to put in my car. the manual suggests 5w-20, which i dont know what that means if you just put that same oil in your car or you vary around with full or 50% synthetic. so could someone just tell me what will be best to put in my car.. im so confused. i trust you guys more than the local jiffy lube guys who only speak spanish. and im not THAT versed in spanish to ask them this kinda question. haha thanks guys i appologize for the lack of knowledge about my car and oil. hey im 16 you gotta start somewhere. --Sy
Oil The new Stangs come with a 5W20 semi-synthetic blend oil from the factory. There are several semi-synthetics available, but for myself, I use nothing but Mobil 1 5W20 full synthetic. It's a very good oil and is easy to find. I changed my oil at 500 miles and used regular dino oil, again at 2000 miles using Mobil 1 and again at 5000 miles using Mobil 1. I will change the oil & filter now every 5000 miles (stay with a Motorcraft filter-you can't do any better and they're reasonable and easy to find). This is a schedule I have used for years and my engines always hold up great.
Im no expert, but ive I went through numerous articles on oil and from what ive read this is what im going to do with my car. They recommend 5w20 so thats what i will stick with. Every 1500 miles i will change the oil using conventional oil because they say synthetic coats the engine components therefore not letting your engine to break in properly. When i will reach 10000 miles then i will start changing it like they recommend every 3 months. Apparently an engine needs approx. 10000 to 12000 miles to break in. A that point I will start putting in synthetic 5w20. Mind you Ive talked to local car buffs who own late sixties muscle cars, and they say it is not necessary. A lot of them use castrol GTX non synthetic oil. I think there is no right answer but as long as you change your oil on a regular basis(every 3 months) it doesnt matter if its synthetic or conventional your engine will be protected. Hope this helps.
Golden Pony, that is interesting to know that the oil in our cars is semi-synthetic. Is that in the owners manual?I haven't changed the oil yet because I only have 300 miles and now its parked t'il the end of april. So i will be changing it first thing when i take it out from storage. If it's semi i will continue with semi because it is not recommended to go from synthetic to conventional.
so since i just got the stang and i put 1100 miles on her, i should change it at around 1500 and put a semi synthetic 5w20? and then somewhere around 2-3000 put in a full synthetic? i just have read like 3209485 different opinions on this and i just wanna know what the heck is the safest course of action.
Call a local Ford service shop. They should tell you that the cars come from the factory with semi-synthetic 5W20. I'm assuming that they don't vary this from region to region, although it's possible they might start with something different if you buy up north during the winter.
if you call ford, they will just say that you need to change it at 3,000 miles instead of the 5,000 that the owners manual says. they will just pump it out of the same hose that they use for all their oil changes. i take my own oil in so i know what goes in. i have used mobil1 5-20 full synthetic since the first oil change.
When I bought my 05, I checked with two different dealerships to see what they recommended (the one I bought at and the one I go to for service, right by my house). They both said to get the first change before 5,000. I had my first change at 3,000. I trusted the dealer to use the 5W20 synthetic blend they said they were going to use.
my first oil change was at 3,000. when i bought my car it already had over 500 miles, becuase it was a dealer trade and they drove it to my dealership for me, so it was not an option for me to change it then. maybe the dealer did it for me, but i doubt it. theres so much hype about proper break in and oil changes, but i dont think it really matters that much. the engines and driveline are run at the factory before they ever go into a car, so what we do becomes amost insignificant. if there was really a problem with break in, we would have to break in our rear end gears also. if you feel that you really need to change your oil sooner than the 5,000 miles that ford recommends, more power to you. i change it every 3,000 and use 15,000 mile oil. i should not have any problems and i am not worried about it.
You know what guys, It really doesnt matter what you do, as long as your comfortable with your choice. Ive had all kinds of toys, snowmachines, 4 wheelers, sea doo's and ive never had engine problems with any of them. These are the facts, new engines create lots of metal shavings for the first 1000 miles or so, therefore it is better to change the oil sooner at first. I will have to find out what kind of oil Ford put in our cars because i find it kind of stupid that they put in a synthetic blend, knowing that synthetic oil is designed to protect against engine wear when that is exactly what we want for the first 10000 miles.(break in) Just my opinion, take care
pg. 232 of the '06 owners manual included with the v6 indicates 5.0 quarts of Premium Synthetic Blend 5W-30 Motor Oil in the US and regular 5W-30 oil in Canada. I would think that the manual is the authority on what they put in the car. Myself, I'll probably end up changing the oil long before the first 5K mark, but I think I'll just stick with the blended 5W-30. In the cars I've had before I honestly can't say that I've noticed much of any difference and they've all lasted to near 200K mi. (longer than that I'm sure, that's just when I sold the others off).
Sometimes I think I am the only person who treats my car like a mode of transportation and not a vintage oldie but goodie. I had my first oil change at 5000, and my second one at 10700. i have no idea what kind of oil they put in it either time. I took it to the ford dealer and let them do their thing. I bought my car with 2024 miles on it in October 2005 and have almost 11000 miles on it now. On the other hand I don't plan on having it more than a few years so it doesn't matter to me. I just don't think that the difference between the oil and the frequency of change is going to make a difference for many, many years in the future.
