So, there I was, the new owner of a 93 LX. As I went over the car I found someone had wired a toggle switch to the TPS! I have no idea why. I removed the toggle wiring and spliced the TPS back together. Now, this is where the problems begin. There was no fire from the coils yet the car would start using starting fluid and would run good after starting. I used a code scanner that found the TPS to be bad and replaced it. After the new TPS the car would start but run very bad. Running another code test gave me a 223 which says that the dual coil is disabled. I ran the car and got at 55 mph in 5th gear turning 1000 rpm. Like I said it ran bad. I replaced the next logical piece, the DIS module and the car finally ran good except the idle surged and remained around 2000 rpm once the surging settled. Now I need the IAC. So, after removing the TPS toggle and wiring I got stuck with replacing the TPS, Both coil packs, DIS module and IAC. Now I ask you what's the point of keeping the electronic computer controlled BS on our cars? I'm getting ready for the 302 change over and you can bet it will be carbed and no computer crap will ever be in that car.
Good luck passing emissions, getting decent mileage, making reliable power, and driving in cold weather. There's this thing called "progress".... Brian
tuning carbs sucks. The MG is carbed and it runs great if the weather is perfect, but if its lousy, it runs lousy. Computer controls are not bad things. I bet a carb that was as old as the OE electronics were wouldnt run worth crap either. By the way.. a stock EFI 2.3T will easily defeat a stock carbed 5.0, and get better milage. Dr.
I would not trade any of my computerized Fords for a carbed anything. Even with my 2.3 fan problems, it drives much nicer than either of my carbed Foxes, or my old Bronco. OBD2 is even better.
I remember thinking that way back in the day working on my 71 mach...I dont need no stinking efi. Just rejet here, adjust fuel bowl there, swap for a tighter distributor advance spring here.... damn thing would still bog at certain rpm's, backfire every now and then, and you'd have to replace carb gaskets, etc once a year. ahhh efi. no rejetting, no vacuum advance, tis the life for me.
dear god, WHY!?? You know Ford made a 351 windsor right? If you start with a good foundation, you'll have better results. I personally will never have another 302. It's almost as pointless as building a chevy 305.
351 winsor was not the choice of my younger years. 351 Cleveland is where it was at. But before that it was the 289 then 302. But since I have a 87 GT sitting here with a bad body, that drive train will go into my LX. The 2.3 with T5 will be sold and to update you guys on the efi woes, I replaced the IAC and the car had steady idle but it was set at 2000 rpm. I had to back off the idle screw. After I achieved 800 rpm I found out that the plugs and wires needed replacement. After all that she's running sweet. A new scan shows two more problems, egr and temp sensor. It never ends. So you see going carbed on the 302, no matter what happens you won't need a code scanner or a computer with a bunch of sensors to run the engine.
