Most of the shops I've dealt with only recommend the Ford Racing/Performance Parts gears. They don't seem to whine like other vendors.

I agree, go with the Ford gears. I had some 3:73's in mine and they were just as quiet as the stock gears.

Funny... I was always under the assumption the FRPP gearsets were manufactured by Motive!?

After speaking with Joe Amato at Downs Ford regarding the issue of Motive Gear's production of FRPP gearsets, he explained to me that M4209XXX-A and M4209XXX (with no letter following) are made in the US by Ford. The M4209XXX-M or M4209XXX-N models are made in Italy and outsourced to the same producer Motive Gear uses. Based on his recommendation, I stuck with the more expensive US model and haven't had any problems whatsoever with noise on 3 different installs (2 solid and 1 IRS). I also spoke with a couple of other guys who do driveline work and they told me that they never have to change the depth shimming on Ford 8.8s when they use the US made FRPP gears, and only rarely do they have to alter the offset shimming for either side. Hence, less errors, less work, and less noise. They also love the US made FRPP gears for obvious reasons.

My buddy put motives in his 99 and liked them fine.

I personally only go with FRPP, but as long as they are hardened steel and your installer has the right gaskets and seals, you should be fine....
