Well 500miles a week is 2000 a month plus another 2 weeks plus its gets more mileage on weekends and I use motorcraft which isn't synthetic so I figure 6weeks is a good change point.Ill actually be changing it today, what does the oil stabilizer do (besides the obvious), what's the advantage? Posted via Mobile Device
The difference is the audis high compression engine. Its proven that Hondas, Audis, well lets put it this way imports oil last longer. I dont know why, it what the factory recommends. Im not saying the oil CANT last longer Im saying its not supposed to, so why not change it by factory specifications. They make conventional oil to brake down at 3000 miles, and they make synthetic oil to go by factory. Also if you use different types it also matters. Mobile 1 which is what I was talking about and Most not all other synthetics go by factory. Lucas oil on the other hand could possibly last I beleive (dont quote me because I forget now) up to 30k??? It just depends. And you are right emgines have come a long way but in order to make them last its just smart to go ahead and do it when your supposed to, and I do agree that it can last longer but its not meant to. The viscosity of the oil deteriorates along with collecting misc particles. Same with the oil filter. The oil filter is only meant for about 6k but you should change it everytime especially since it nonw comes with the oil change most places. A more expensive oil filter gets out more of the particles and can last longer. Im not saying you dont know what your talking about because you do, Im just saying I was a mechanic and had to go to classes for mobil, not to mention I was in Auto tech for 2 years before I became a mechanic for 2 years. Im not the smartest at everything and I D*MN sure dont know everything but this is just recommendations for the vehicles best performance and lasting. Sorry to argue just trying to help
Don't be sorry. This is what internet forums are all about to discuss our thoughts and opinions. In the end it's your car so you need to decide what's the best. Like I said, a oil's life is determined by it's environment. Ford recommends 5,000 miles with semi-synthetic oils. So, there is no reason why you can't go more with a full synthetic oil. Not to mention, Ford isn't going to recommend a mileage for oil changes that is on the brink. Ford doesn't want to pay increased costs for warranty repairs. Also shorter oil change intervals means Ford dealers make more money for maintenance. As far as oil filters, most oil filters start working better with ~3,000 miles.
Also another thing to take in consideration is what some oil manufacturers are saying regarding how oil works in terms of cleaning. Reading a Mobil 1 brochure they stressed at one point that having a clear oil during the change is not a good thing. They recommend changing the oil when it is visibly dirty and that's because the oil has done its job of removing contaminants and particles from your engine. A clear oil has not so it is more harmful to your engine. I guess the point they are trying to make is that extended intervals are not only ok but recommended since you are giving the oil more time to start working on cleaning your engine.
Using Lucas oil stabilizer runs about 9-10 dollars a quart but I don't miss an oil change without substituting one quart. 5 of preferred brand and 1 Lucas = 6 qts. If you have every benn in to an O'Riellys in the past 2 years you have seen the little display that has two cranks on it and about 4 gears on each side. One shows how regular motor oil clings to the gears-- which is it does not very good-- and one the other side is the Lucas oil stabilizer that when you crank it, has a webbed action to it and clings to the gears A LOT BETTER!! That is why I do this, even if I use regular, synthetic blend, or full synthetic I will always substitute one quart for the Lucas stuff. In older vehicles that I have it has also gotten rid of those annoying knocking sounds that you get in an older motor. I can not explain the technical aspects off how it clings better but I have noticed better wear and tear on any vehicle that I HAVE EVER HAD. Been using this method for 10 years!!!
I've always changed it with the 6qts (includes filter change)...I would think that if you're a quart low that the "low oil" light should come on...that's really strange.
