Whoa... Sounds like a winner to me.

Though I hope they will still produce some kind of manual transmission as the base option.

I love the idea and it's great, however I still prefer doing the work myself :D

This will be good for many (me included) that need the 'driver mod' for the track.

I really don't care for the part where Ford says that they plan on 100% of their transmissions being DSG by 2013. Please don't take away my manual option. There is no replacement for a manual transmission.

+1. I'm not interested in an automatic of any sort. If I want to drive a car with an automatic, I'll drive either my Camaro or my wife's new A3 Quattro.

I'm pretty sure the 100% replacement means all current automatics could get replaced with this, not manuals.

This seems ripe for a paddleshifting setup. I would love to see that in a GT500.

Yeah I think that's the case as well. This is one of those changes I think are way overanalyzed. The DSG trans is faster than any person could ever hope to shift anyway. 50ms from a DSG and 500ms from a human is quite a difference.

I'm pretty sure that most people that drive a manual don't really care that much about how fast they can shift the gears. Driving a manual is about so much more than that. You really have so much more control than you do with any other transmission and it is just much much more fun. I'd pick 500ms myself over 50ms from a computer any day.

That was just from a performance take of it. These transmissions can actually shift as fast as 8 milliseconds. These are far more efficient than standard autos, they have less parasitic loss and therefore can help return better fuel economy. So in case you don't get it, this is a better deal than the current 5R55S. I didn't say it's better than a manual because that is a driver's opinion (though from a performance standpoint, you'll lose)

Downsides to the DSG at the moment is the cost to rebuild (rediculously expensive) and the torque limits of the trans (currently pretty weak).

They're seriously gonna call it a powershift, thats funny. Studebaker used that back in the 50/60s iirc.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that it wasn't better than the current automatic. I think the point was that no one wants the true manual option taken away. I could care less how slow I shift compared to a computer controlled transmission, I'd still take the manual. And that's not to knock the DSG, I understand people who don't know how to drive manual, or don't want to drive in bumper to bumper traffic riding a clutch, obviously this will be good for them. And so they shift faster.....but I have more fun doing it myself. :)

If this will be as fuel efficient as a manual, I wonder if drivetrain horsepower loss will also now be on equal footing? No more different stock dyno numbers that depend on your tranny type?
