Hey everyone, Im sure this was talked about before but I cant figure out how to search on here so please bare with me. I have a 93 lx 2.3l 5-speed and I am wondering if i am able to put the svo turbo on it or will it be to many problem. Did the turbo 2.3ls come with 8 sparkplugs like mine has or was there just 4? What parts would I even need to get if this is possible? Turbo Manifold, intercoller, turbo, new intake (65mm), and injectors? Am i still able to use the stock 5-speed that came with it also?
Your engine has cast pistons which will not survive the abuse a turbo will dish out. That is just the beginning, perhaps one of the Turbo Lords will grace your thread with a more knowledgeable response. They grow weary of this question, which is asked in one form or another every week.
Not on a dual plug, it would be pointless, you could buy a turbo motor for about 1/4 of what you would have to spend.
Yes, you need to look for a turbo motor. You could turbocharge a n/a Mustang, but you would need a lot of modifications, it would cost a lot of money, and would just not be as good an idea as it would be to buy a 2.3 turbo motor and drop it in. To the extent of my turbo knowledge, this is what you would need to do to be able to turbocharge a naturally aspirated 2.3: - Forged Pistons (Naturally aspirated pistons won't cut it) - Turbo exhaust header (I believe that the turbo mounts to it) - New injectors - You would need to switch to a single plug head - Intercooler - Tap Oil Pan - Oil Return line I'm sure there are more things that I have missed as well. The stock t-5 speed transmission will work with a turbo. Bottom line is though, that if you want to go turbo, get a turbo motor and drop it into the Mustang you have now. Or you could just buy a SVO or Turbo Coupe or Merkur and use that as your driver.
hey guys, thanks for the replys, so now im going to go on my search to find the right engine. Last question though, if and when i find a 2.3l turbo engine, will it just bolt up right in place where the old 2.3 was or does it need some fab. to get it in? The rest of my questions ill just try to find the answers in the forum, im sure they are there just need to find them. Thanks a million, Ryan
yup, all you do is bolt it in, re-pin a turbo computer in place of your old n/a comp, the only fab that needs to be done is some mounts for a front mount intercooler(FMIC) but this is optional. do some research and it will all seem easier and easier. here's a good place, compliments of Stingerhttp://projecthp.ford23.com/
Try and look for a 87-88' TC Thunderbird. This car is pretty easy to come by still and is your best bet for good parts since its basicaly the last year of the 2.3T. ( I think the 89' Merkur still used this motor but not sure) The twin plug head was used on the last of the 2.3L. The mustangs was 91-93' while I think the rangers used it up to 96' but not sure.
This is not a bad idea. Really I see Merkurs all the time for as low as 750.00 bux. Then all you do is spend a few hounderd bux upgrading it to like a large VAM and FMIC etc. I would guess for around 1000.00 you could have a cool sleeper since some people still don't know what a Merkur is or looks like
Hey guys thanks for all the resources one question i couldnt find the answer too was, will my 5speed in there now bolt up to the 2.3t?
Like Woodster said it will work fine. There is a slight gear ration difference between the 2.3L and a 2.3T T-5 but nothing that would keep you from having some fun
