I really wish I could give you more specs on the turbo but I think he wants to keep those to himself(I guess custom turbos are looked at like custom cams..haha) and the cam is a custom grind from Ed C and yes it's a "hydro".
Yeah but what about in between shifts. Like at the track. Do you lose all boost? That's what I'm wondering? I alway here that if you're using an auto get a turbo if and stick use a supercharger.
Whoever told you that needs to go back to school! The car just got done so it hasn't been to the track yet but I've NEVER been in a turbo car and it lost all boost on the gear change. Even the turbo 4 cylinders with 67mm+ turbos on them don't have that issue. Some of the big single Supras have that issue because they run 90mm turbos with a 1.2x exhaust housing, that with combined slow shifting may cause a lag in between gear changes. Turbo Mustangs don't have spooling issues, I bet I can put my car in 4th gear and be at full boost before most centrifi blowers have made 5psi. I've had a supercharger on my car before and it disappointed me so bad I didn't even keep it for more than three months, waste of money. This is probably breaking site rules but look at this video of my car racing a supercharged 99+ car with 4.10 gear. His 4.10 gear is all that kept him beside my 3.55 geared pos car for as long as he was: YouTube - 92GreenGT vs 04 Procharged gt BTW mods, if that's breaking site rules just remove the link. Thanks!
Nice man!! That's great to know!! I've always wanted to do a turbo Mustang after having so many supercharged ones. I'm going to have to look into it deeper!! Start setting the Stang up for it!
I had this long ass thing typed up,.. and decided to erase it. lol Simply said .. yes,.. turbo's are VERY cool!! -Me.
lol!! Cool!! That's my plan then! Where did you guys go to research turbo 'Stangs? I need to learn what I need.
Ahh, not really true at all. You may not realize you're losing boost at all between shifts but it's incredible how much slower a turbo car is with a manual. I am a stick shift guy 100%. I love beating the hell out of my tranny and shifting my own gears, but I will be the first to tell you a turbo car NEEDS an automatic to be used to it's potential. End of story. You will see guys cutting off over a second going from a stick to an auto. My buddy's turbo stang went pretty decent with the 3550, and he actually knew how to drive it, it was always power shifted. After putting a th400 in it the car is so much faster it's not even right. Not only will it be faster, it will hook up much better and be much more consistent. Your buddy's car is making enough power to go mid 8s with an automatic and properly setup car. I would be very surprised if it goes mid 9s with a stick. turbomustangs.com Just starting reading. That site is all you will ever need.
You could always use an anti-lag set-up on the manual car to try to keep the turbos spinning though! And they sound just mean when they're backfiring away, although I don't imagine you could run one and keep cats on the car lol
no question turbo cars love autos.. but if someone wants to run a manual than by all means.. I want to eventually go with a g-force 6 speed.. but who knows.. I may end up going with an auto myself.. Auto cars are a ton easier to drive the more power you make. that fox in the OP is a monster!! Very good to see smaller cubes making big power!
Turbo's suck! Ha, i've been happy with my swap from the vortech! Nice #'s, but i'd like to see some track times from it. I've went 6.70's in the 1/8th shiftin like a ****......going back tomorrow morning to see if 6.5x's are attainable. Yours is makin' some nice powa too Dave. Props to Rick also! Jason
ahh...see this is the debate I've been struggling with. Now...I've driven supercharged Stang forever. Always stick. Is it that much different between and blower or turbo car? I feel I can bang gears quickly. Hell I have video but IDK. I'm not looking to make a track beast. More street/strip. No bracket racing for money/points. I'm thinking about it!! Think I'm gonna start saving up for a kit. I hear BG is great!!
Glad to see you're still around, how ya been buddy? 6.70's are rolling out, good luck on getting the 50's out of it. I'm not going to argue about what works best and all that, sure an auto would be faster but a manual is where it's at on car that has a 99% street duty life. The spec clutch gave up the ghost bad today, it looked like it blew a headgasket behind the car going down the road. Twin disc has been ordered and will be here this upcoming week then it goes back for a 27-30psi pull just for fun. Car drives really good, took it on a 40-50 mile cruise today with zero issues. -Edit- Just wanted to make sure that everyone understands this car isn't going to be a real ET car at the track. It'll be a car that gets drove to the track(70 miles one way), cools off and makes some passes and gets driven home. It'll probably have some pretty good mph though! Our next "street fight" is in two weeks I believe, so we should have new track times for my car and his, as long as my tranny is here and installed by then. Will post an update.
Um, what exactly is an "anti-lag set-up"? "Lag" would be the time before the turbo spools, has nothing to do with between gears unless you're the slowest shifter of all time. Sure, a manual stick car is fun, but it's just not going to work the way it should. A manual transmission just makes a turbo setup very inefficient. Go for a ride in a FAST auto turbo car. When it's in 1st gear for that instant and you think it can't get any faster, then it clicks into high gear and loads down the turbo and suddenly you feel like the seat is going to break underneath you, you can't breathe and it resembles what time travel would probably be like. That's when you realize a turbo car is supposed to have an auto. Yes, it is very different. Post up the video! Unless it's a 99% street race car Most intelligent and correct statement on Stang Net ever.
Yeah I hear those "anti-lag" setups are really hard on the turbo's and you'll be replacing turbos like you would sparkplugs. LOL!! Here's a couple videos.... This one is when I had the Mach 1 N/A.
