Recently bought a 96 Cobra and the engine is clean, but the builder tag cannot be seen anymore. The outline is still there, but nothing is legible. Is there anyway to get another one?

Your '96 engine (and some '97s) came with a paper "builder tag" from the Romeo MI engine line. It would have looked similar to picture that user CobraVert97 posted in the following thread over on Corral:

I *believe* that you can no longer order these OEM paper build plaques (unless you come across the rare one on Ebay or at a swap meet, etc).

BUT, call SVT (1-800-ford-svt during normal business hours) first to confirm this - they were able to send out "replacement" engine build tags to some 96/97 owners a few years ago. I highly doubt they still do this, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Many of SVT's policies have changed (such as the $40 cost now to order a SVT "build certificate" that once used to be free with proof of ownership - times are different, gotta keep costs in check).

However, one other option for you is to consider a metal build plaque as a replacement (obviously it won't be historically "correct" for your model year cobra, but it would still look nice IMHO). Details for the reproduction copy of the metal build tags can be found below:

    G'luck.
