My 93 Cobra rims have the paint peeling and I need to either repaint or powdercoat them anyone ever do this to theirs and have any suggestions?
www.metrowheels.net They actually do straightning and welding of damaged wheels. Im about to send a set of 18inch roush wheels there. They claim that they will look like new when I get them back. We will see.
WHEEL REFINISH I am not sure where exactly you live, but I work for Keystone Automotive, and we specialize in wheel repair & refinish, it costs around $100 - $125, and they turn out just like new I have three set of our wheels for my Cobra. So if you let me know the area you are in I could point you in the direction of the nearest keystone.
There was an article in Mustang Monthly years ago, they restored some ten holes off a Fox. It was very simple and straight forward. I don't have the issue anymore, but they striped the wheel, did a light polish by hand I believe, and then shot some clearcoat over it again.... not too complicated...
I am not tring to push my company in any way, but with my expierence w/ bodyshop fixing wheels, the clear will crack when you try to put tires back on the wheels. If they do not need to be straighted you could try to take them to a powder coating company and have them cleared there, but i think they might charge you just as much as Keystone to fix them, and also if keystone fixeS the wheels you have a lifetime warrenty.
Local shops here in Michigan have to send them somewhere else, but I have seen the recons and they look great.
Here is one of the articles I had on the topic. Aluminum rims can be refinished by sanding with 400 wet sand paper then move to 600 then 1000 then 1500 after this has been done and the old clear coat is gone, your rims will start looking better. You will see very fine scratches take a buffer and use a medium duty rubbing compound then finish buffing with Perfect-It II rubbing compound from 3M, then use the Mothers Power Ball and a good polish finish off by clear coating with glisten pc clear coat by por 15 (apply a few coats) and the rims should look good as new.
